Possible Shipping damage, what would you do?
Hi all! I just bought a 2019 1LE, 426 miles, shipped enclosed from Ohio to CA. I asked shipper and dealer to take pics before. They did not.
Once the car arrived, a few hours later I noticed a 3" scratch through the matte vinyl on the lip of the hood facing the windshield. Some deductive reasoning looks like the windshield wiper was up, off glass, when someone opened the hood. Dealer said they would detail the car before it was shipped. Now both parties are denying anything and not returning calls. I've been very respectful. I just feel ignored and a bit used. Or am I being petty? Should I just take a black marker to it? Or fight this and see if this is insurance/warranty issue? What would you do?

How much does it cost to have it wrapped again? Probably less of a headache than fighting over who is to blame. Most likely won’t get you anywhere. But, I’d also be pretty upset over that. Hard to know who to trust anymore. Also might want to make sure the wipers work properly. I think you’re right in that someone opened the hood with the wipers extended. Most likely the people who did the detailing. But, hard one to prove.

Maybe try to touch up with Plasti-Dip or a paint pen rather than a black marker?

Hi. I guess it just depends on how particular you are about your car. In the pic is doesn't look that bad and it is also in a very inconspicuous spot. I would recommend what Mark114 says. Leave the dealer and shipping company behind and move on. Good luck. Look at it as, you won't be so pissed off when you get your first paint chip!

i can certainly see that peeling in the not so distant future. my wrap is suffering in several places, the car spends 95% of its life in the garage. is your car yellow? if so, that’s your punishment for buying a yellow car

I'd keep on them till someone paid to fix it. That car is still brand new at 400+ miles. And it doesn't look like the dealer had it detailed at all. I bet its $300 to $500 to have the old wrap removed and have the hood rewrapped.
Does the shipping include insurance? |

I did the wiper mistake on my car. I have the exact same damage. So yes the hood was opened with the wiper up.
And it will definitely peel or shrink around this area in the future. I doubt the shipping company opens the hood during the shipping. If the dealer did some detail and validated some stuff before having it shipped, they definitely opened the hood. I'd check with the dealer and ask them to pay for the fix.

I think you're pretty much out of luck. Noticing it three hours after the transporter left, there is plenty of room for deniability from both parties.

I tried this with a few small rock chips in my hood wrap (applied with toothpicks) and you could see a raised bump on each spot so I rubbed them off with my finger. Idk if it would last through a wash anyways. There might not be a visible bump in this case since it is on an edge.

And, dealerships wonder why people don't trust them. THIS is why! Proper response: "Damn, that sucks but no one is perfect. I raised the hood while the car was being detailed and the wiper arm was up. So, I damaged the hood wrap. We should have the hood rewrapped as we did the damage.". Typical, unethical, and dishonest response: "Holy sh*t, look what I did! Oh, well, let's just act like it didn't happen and hopefully the buyer won't see it until there's an opportunity for denial. It's their money, not mine.".
When I bought my 2004 Mazda RX-8, they had to drive the car to my OH dealership from PA. The person who drove it was apparently having fun with it and I don't know what he did, but there were scratches, scuffs, and splitter damage underneath the front end and down the right side. I didn't notice at delivery as it was raining really hard. At my first detail, I noticed all of the damage. I had to threaten an attorney and negative press but they finally took the car back and located me another one. At that time, in OH, there was some revised code that stated if the car wasn't delivered as "new", that the buyer didn't have to accept it and could return it. I ended-up getting a different, new one that had even more equipment for the same price. Needless to say, I NEVER went there for service or ever returned for another purchase. |

You’ll end up getting more aggravated than it’s worth going after the dealer (It almost certainly was caused by them) I’d either sharpie it for now, add a very small piece of matte black over that spot (I’ve done this before, barely noticeable -quick look), or leave as is, or plan to replace / remove entirely later on. Who knows, maybe you’ll want to change it up later on.
