Of course you can chance it and always be on your way to a show or parade. Harder to explain at 8:00 on a Monday morning.

The best thing is to get Classic status, you have no emissions inpsection, the safety inspection cost every year is about 15 dollars, and you can drive whenever you want.
Classic is 25 years and older, antique is 50 and older, I thought.

From TXDOT

Antique license plates are issued for cars, trucks or motorcycles that are at least 25 years old and are a collector’s item. The vehicle must be used exclusively for exhibitions, club activities, parades or other functions of public interest. Vehicles displaying Antique plates may not be used for regular transportation or carry advertising. The vehicle may be driven to and from a location for routine maintenance

Classic license plates are issued to cars that are 25 or more years old. Unlike antiques, which cannot be used for regular transportation or carry advertising, classic license plates require a vehicle to be fully registered like any other vehicle, allowing it to be operated on any roadway. A specialty plate fee of $15 is charged in addition to the regular registration fee and other applicable fees.

Cool, learn something new everyday That distinction makes more sense, when I think about it.

I just know from the other car club I am in, there are members that have both types, and it has been discussed in length. I have a 1972 MGB, with classic, personalized plates...with all the fees it's more to register than my Camaro.

Thanks for all the information...I am sure we will figure out what we need to do to register when we get there! I was more concerned with an inspection, so as long as our "classic/antique" cars are exempt for stuff like emissions we should be fine.

We'll take are chance on the front plates, lived in Ohio with them and never installed them there...one warning I think. Again, was concerned they would enforce that during an inspection.

Deep into a house hunt with a trip down in September...again thanks for all of the advice!
