4th Gen SS to New 6th Gen LT1
Anyone one here owned any 4th Gen SS or Z28 Camaros with the LS1? It was originally rated for 320hp but was basically a 345hp Corvette engine. I own a 1998 SS 6 speed with the 1LE package and I am considering the upgrade to a 2023 LT1. Is the difference in power noticeable in a new 3600 lb Camaro versus a 3100 lb Camaro? No LT1's or SS's near me for a test drive. I am really struggling with my decision. I look at this forum everyday and youtube videos every night trying to decide. My current 98 SS is really rare and Hagerty has it valued at around 26K. That is the hard part for me since I have owned it for 22 years.

Keep the 98, buy a new car as well. I had a 98 formula that I sold after getting my LT1. The power difference and everything else is noticeable.

I have a 2002 SS and a 17 ZL1 and owned an 18 SS.
My Quick Review: 4th gen is a visceral beast, plenty of power, very fun car to drive even when not pushing it to its limits. very old school muscle car feel with burnouts, slides, etc. 6th gens are a completely different ball game. The chassis is so refined it takes a whole lot to get the same thrill as the 4th gen. You will definitely notice the difference in raw power BUT, its almost soo controlled that you just don't get that same feeling of danger and adrenaline unless you really push the car to it's limits. The 20-years of engineering is very evident. I do love my 4th gen and would prefer it for the excitement factor over a 6th gen SS or less. Now, if you find yourself owning a ZL1, the 4th gen becomes an afterthought. I am actually looking to sell 2002 (again) just because the 6th gen ZL1 has that feeling of danger and excitement combined with very good control. To me its the best of both. Once i sell the 4th gen camaro, I will only find myself back in a 4th gen if I can find a reasonably priced WS6 Trans Am.

My last FBody was this 2000 Firehawk. It was a heads/cam/tuned car and made real good power for the time, around 460whp. It was a pretty quick car at that time and to think my SS makes 300whp more and pulls down 20+ mpg while cruising on the highway with the AC on.
Really liked the car but was offered good money for it and it was gone. Power, handling and quality of the interior cannot compare. And the amount of power these new cars can make with just a relatively small investment is just crazy. Looking at the pictures though, still wish Pontiac was around to make a Gen6 with that Trans Am styling.

That said OP you have a very rare car. In this market I'd think you could get more than 26K. |

Especially in the Gen4's the Pontiac versions looked much better.

I never liked the 4th generation Camaro, but I've owned 3rd, 5th and 6th generation V-8 Camaros. Comparing the 5th generation to the 3rd generation, there was a vast power difference. The 3rd gen made great noises but were choked by the heavy emissions standards of the late 80s to early 90s. The sixth generation is amazing, but much more balanced and "safe" feeling than the earlier ones. You can still have fun, and I am planning on keeping the 6th gen till it dies or I do.

I have owned 3 4th gens and my stock LT1 is significantly faster.
Best time with my full bolt on 4th gen was a 13.2 @ 105 I have been 12.5 @115 in the 6th gen completely stock.

I'm in the same boat (2000 SS & 2018 ZL1) and couldn't have said it any better than this (almost). I plan on keeping both until the end of time (me being the original owner of the 2000 SS means is worth more in sentimental value so driving brings back so many memories the ZL1 doesn't have.....yet.) |

99 Z28 and 2017 Camaro SS There is a significant difference in power and you will feel it. The SS is on a much better platform, is more balanced and controled than the 4th Gen (on dry pavement atleast. On wet pavement and goodyears its a different story) The A10 in your 2023 model is LIGHTYEARS ahead of the 4L60E. My 4th Gen was mostly stock at the time I bought my SS. At the time, my 4th Gen Z28 and my 1LT V6 (the 6th Gen I owned before buying an SS) were pretty evenly matched. But the 6th Gen SS was in another league in both accelleration and handling. It didn't help that the components on the 4th Gen were 18 years old when I bought my 2017 SS ... Yes... you WILL notice a big difference, the SS has better gearing more power. I have since put an cammed LS3 as well as a stall converter / Longtubes / True Duals / LID / larger MAF / built tranny, and coming soon a MWC Fab 9 rear axle.. ..Now my 4th Gen is alittle bit faster than my stock SS but not so much that it was truly worth the money. Would have been wiser to mod the 6th Gen. Eventually I will.. ..I would just keep the 4th Gen on the side.. ..you aren't ganna get more than $1k for it at any dealer. |

Currently driving a 2000 Trans Am that I’ll be selling when my 1LE shows up. I’ve spent more than 10 years in 4th gens and for me it’s just time to move on.
Stock vs stock, there’s no comparison. If you care about straight line stuff, the 6th Gen has better power to weight and doesn’t have the glass 10 bolt. If you care about handling, the 4th Gen is just sloppy in stock form. I have Strano springs and Konis and it’s still frustrating to drive fast around an autocross course. The 6th Gen has one of the best chassis on the market from a handling perspective, there’s no comparison. The 4th Gen does have much more space, and I’ll miss my T Tops.

I had a 95 Z28, traded it for a 2009 G8 GT. No comparison, even though the G8 was a sedan, it was worlds better than the "old" GM engineering. Chassis, interior, drivetrain, etc better in so many ways. Eventually got a 2014 1LE and it was awesome. That was the car I struggled with getting rid of. But, last October I traded it in and ordered a Gen6 SS 1LE. The Gen6 Camaro raised the bar even further over the Gen5. If you get a Gen6, you'll soon forget about the Gen4.
My buddy has a 2000 Camaro SS M6, I had driven it and my Gen5 1LE back to back and I have never regretted selling my '95 Z28. I had my '95 for 14 years. The Gen6's LT1 engine is on a whole other level vs an LS1. Yes, the power difference is noticeable. The direct injection torque band is wide and robust. The Gen4 was a great car in its day but time and technology marches on. Since your Gen4 is rare, do you drive it as much as you want? Or does it's rarity keep you from driving it? Do you wish it wasn't rare so you would not feel guilty about driving it? I'm not on the bandwagon of letting cars sit. Yeah they look great but it's the driving that is the most satisfying. Honestly, go for a Gen6 SS 1LE. You'll never regret it. My .02, good luck!
