Paint flaking... Warranty expectations?

Here's a pic of one of my 2018 SS 1LE rear wheels. 3yr 36k warranty is up in october. Car has 6400 miles on it.

I decided to stop at my local dealer to see what can be done. Their answer.... Nothing. They claim GM will not replace this wheel unless the coating was flaking on the face of the wheel. To me this is definetely a defect, it's an adhesion problem.

So what does everyone think? Find another dealer? Buy some touch up and fix it as best I can myself? Trade it in for a Prius?

I'd ask the dealership about getting all 4 wheels powder coated instead, because unless you had a mishap specific to this wheel, it's only a matter of time the other three will start flaking, too.

Also, in the grand scheme of things I see no point in replacing a perfectly good wheel over a paint issue, it's much better to address the paint problem itself.

Agree on two fronts… definitely an adhesion issue but arpad_m is on point here. Only a matter of time until the other three rims start to flake. I’m not fully sold on fusion bond being a durable option, but it’s definitely better than a bad paint job.

if there isn't any damage to the wheels, stripping and powder coating isn't too awfully much, even comparing the price to just 1 wheel new.

around here, you can get all 4 wheels repaired, powdercoated, and ceramic coated for 750.

if there is no damage, and no ceramic coating, you could get them just stripped and powdercoated for around 400 ish

Put the stock 2020 SS pads on it, in about 50 miles of driving you will not even see it

EIDT, but seriously, good luck - maybe try another dealer.

Looking at the pic it appears to show a point of impact leading to the issue.

Second, normal wear and tear is not covered.

Third, you have to take tie wheel off the car to even see it. Dude I’m the pickiest person when it comes to this and this wouldn’t make my top 100 complaints on my car………..and I don’t have 100 complaints.

Sorry

The wheel is not damaged, a stone chip in that area is certainly possible but the flaking is my concern. It doesn't really bother me but I wanted to see what a dealer would say about it.

I'll let it ride and then if I don't trade the car in on a 24 ZL1 I'll get them refinished one day down the road when there's more of a reason.

Thanks for the insight fellas

Ive gotten wheels replaced due to corrosion on aluminum wheels but as you indicated, it was on the face of the wheel (and it was a Mazda), I think it's a huge leap to try and get a warranty on it.

I would sand a little bit and do a touchup.

I'd sand all around it and just spray some paint on there. like someone else has said, it looks like an impact event caused the initial issue. Just get it spot fixed and it'll be fine.

I would agree that it looks to be caused by an initial impact, but there is an adhesion problem as well. Try another dealer or two and see what they say; that will give you the answer.

My Fifty had the clearcoat coming off of two wheels and the dealership went above and beyond to get em replaced. I had the paint peeling all in my bed for no reason on a new F150 I'd bought in 2013, happened a year into ownership, dealership wouldn't do anything about it, called Ford corporate and they said tough luck. YMMV.

I've got a couple of similar, but a little smaller, flaked off spots on my 18 2SS stock wheels. The black paint is trash. I've only got 6500 miles on mine as well. Rarely driven and bought brand new.

I've been waiting to buy new wheels and I also think the stock wheels look super cheap too.

Sorry fellas I don’t see an impact point? I see (many) imperfections in the pour itself that the paint seems to have adhered to, and one imperfection that the paint didn’t adhere to, (IMO) facilitating the flake. That said, tough to tell with the quality of the pic, and my dirty IPad screen.

Once that starts though the only way to stop it is by sanding completely and starting over.
