Big Brother x2

I read another thread a week or 2 ago about GM selling information to Insurance companies.

So, the Email I got yesterday feels like a continuation of Big Brother.

Thursday morning, while driving to work, I got a CEL in my ZL1. About 30min after getting to work, I got this Email:

Dear Steven Vedell,
An issue with the emissions system in your 2018 Chevrolet Camaro has been detected. Please service your vehicle within 7 days.

Please disregard this message if your vehicle is already in for service. Inaccurate notifications can be generated during service.

Please see your dealer for service.

I am digging through my garage now to find my code reader and see what the error is. Car still drives fine and has no loss of power.

But this Email intrigues me.... What happens if I do NOT get it serviced by a dealer within 7 days? Will OnStar remotely disable my vehicle? Will they report me to EPA?

Any ideas folks?

And for the record, the only mods on my car are a Green air filter in the stock air box and an aftermarket shift stalk and ball. Absolutely NO engine or electronics mods whatsoever. Hell, I haven't even tried to get it tuned yet.

Threads like this make me want to dig into that old thread about disabling Onstar physically. Even though I’ve shut off any info sharing and do not subscribe, I trust GM about as much as I trust Anthony Fauci. Which is to say, NOT AT ALL.

You tell me this won't void warranty and I am doing the same

It won’t void the warranty on anything that is unrelated. So, if you complained about your nav or onstar not working that would obviously not be covered. But removing the onstar/gps chip had nothing to do with, say, a power window not working. Or your differential blowing up.

There was a good old thread about this that you should read through. The OP knows a lot more about this than I do:

It isn’t much more the than the monthly email I get from Onestar letting me know my vehicle stats like oil life, recalls, etc. I doubt anything will happen if you ignore the message.

I’m not a fan of big brother monitoring me or my driving habits either

Well, could not find my old scan tool. It was like 8 years old anyway, so I ordered a new one from Amazon. Should be here tomorrow. Curious to know what could set off a CEL but NOT affect driveability or power....

I wonder if it is the gas filler seal. I remember with my 5th Gen camaro, a faulty gas cap seal could cause a CEL.

An Autosone will scan it for free if you don’t want to wait on the scanner.

I hadn’t gotten any message like that yet and my power train warranty is gone.

Yeah, my warranty is gone too... I only have 26,700 miles. But, she will be 5 years old in April.

Every time my Camaro was in Ted's shop for upgrades, I got a multitude of these emails... there was no escaping the knowledge of what they were working on, didn't even need to call them

They're annoying, but mostly harmless, gm may just be trying to be helpful with the notifications. The dealership is automatically set to the purchasing dealer and one can update it online, and I think these diag emails can also be turned off. GM will still always know the status of the car via OnStar, though, which can indeed be problematic.

My understanding is that a solid CEL relates to an emissions problem, while a flashing CEL would be a serious engine function problem.

Given this, I suspect many issues might occur without noticeably affecting drivability or power, including (as you mentioned) gas cap

That would make sense, was my initial understanding of "Vehicle health report" type of things. But the message OP showed has "Fix your car in 7 DAYS" which raises an eyebrow. I would understand message like "this is serious stuff, don't neglect it" type of message, but ultimatum? Actual time to fix? What if I don't do that then?
