Popped out of first gear today!!!
So long story short, i have a 22 2ss manual with only 2000 miles odo. Today leaving work, 72 degrees out, put the car in first and gently releasing the clutch, 100% sure the gear was engaged, all of a sudden car tries to move forward but then a loud thud noise and i see the gear is back in neutral. Has this happened to anyone? After that car drove fine but it was a very loud pop/thud.

Has happened to me a couple times @ around 2,000-4,000 miles. The few times it has happened to me the car was still warming up. I don't think it's a real issue. I think 1.) the gear may have been engaged but not fully. Pay close attention when it's cold and and try engaging 1st two times in a row. Sometimes it goes in farther the second time, noticing that kind of helps feel how it "should" be. 2.) I don't know these transmissions well but it's probably the detent springs or something like that still a little too stiff/not broken in yet. I'm at ~7k miles now it hasn't happened in a while.

This has never happened. Yes, there have been times when I did not get it fully into gear and it popped to neutral. That was me, I'm sure. I was always like, "Yeah, I missed it that time." Never popped out of gear like you describe. |

I was sure it was me the once or twice I had it on my former 18 1LE, never thought it was a mechanical problem.

To make sure I am fully in first gear on a cold transmission I pull it down into second then up to first and repeat. I fine cycling the gear shift a couple times like that gets me solidly into first before I engage the clutch.

Hot or cold, this should never happen.
Hopefully just a shifter problem, not transmission. Either way, covered by warranty. |

Also a routine for me. I think I've done this on every manual car I've owned. I don't even notice it. It's just a better way to feel what the linkage is doing.

I agree! I don't want to be a wet blanket, but that is a symptom of a bent shift fork. This happened to 3rd gear on a previous T56 car I owned , and it is exactly the same symptoms. The repair on mine was replacing 3rd and 4th gear.
