My last race at Thunderhill in a Spec Racer Ford
Thought the track crowd here might appreciate this. I have been working on my SCCA license this year, and this video was my final race of the season, in a Spec Racer Ford Gen3, at Thunderhill. Awesome cars!!
https://youtu.be/N1-Pu55lFxI For those of you that don't know, these are ~1560 lb purpose-built cars made with a steel tube frame chassis, mid-rear-mounted 4-cylinder engine with around 130 bhp, and a 3-piece fiberglass body. Tiny 185/60/13 and 205/60/13 rear Hoosier tires. Open cockpit and styling inspired by vintage Can-Am cars. Basically, the complete opposite of our Camaros. I somehow managed a 1:59.5 in qualifying (east cyclone config) with this car on old Hoosiers, which got me P3 on the grid out of ~25 cars in class and ~30 cars overall. The overall fastest lap in the race (on new tires) was a mid-1:58. But unlike everyone else near me on the grid, I started the race on these same old tires, which proved to be a big challenge for me in the second half of the race. On this same track I'm slightly faster in my ZLE (although I don't push my Camaro nearly as hard as I push this thing, so the Camaro should be at least a few seconds faster when driven with equal commitment). But the Camaro has 5 times more horsepower and around 2.4 times more weight. So pretty damn impressive performance for a little 130 bhp car!!
