Valve train noise?

Have been noticing some pretty apparent valve train noise between 1500-2000 RPM, particularly with the windows down driving next to concrete walls or next to other parked cars. Is anyone hearing anything similar?

I took an iPhone video, not sure if it'll be audible in the video, but you can sort of hear it (it's louder in person).

Guessing this is your first car with direct injection?

Hard to tell in your video, but all I hear is the DI, it's noisy in these cars. Plus, it looks like you're in your garage, that amplifies it...

5th car with DI. I'll get a better video.

Sometimes switching oil brands quiets things down. For me, the valve train seemed to be noisier with M1 than others. Just my experience.......

I hear it on mine too, but IMO, totally normal.

When I can hear the sound bouncing off of a wall 25' away, that's not really "normal" to me. It sounds like my first car, my '88 Mazda's hydraulic lash adjusters would tick just like this and it sounded like poop.

Here's another video, you'll hear the ticking (still sounds worse in person) starting at about :20

I think I'll ask the techs at the dealership the next time I'm by.

Yeah, that sounds like poop.

I'll have to check mine.

Mine's doing it right between 1700 and 2000 RPM, and a little bit at 1000.

Did this start all of a sudden, if so i would not start it anymore and have the car transported to the dealer. You may have a broken valve spring.

I might be wrong but I didn't find it suspicious, if you're referring to that sewing machine like engine noise, it might be normal for a few cars .. I know from a fact that all the Subarus (STIs, BRZ, Outback ) sounded like that. With a valve train noise, I would expect to hear more like knocking valves

You might be right though, maybe it's not easy to capture with a phone camera

So is this you free revving, not under a load in your garage or something? I mean I only listened to it on my mobile phone, and it sounds like the direct injection to me...you said you had other DI cars, but were they 8 cylinders? The more cylinders, the more injectors, the more noise, as the DI is working at something over 2000 psi...DI is definitely not quiet, and there is little DI insulation in these cars. I'll have to listen to it on my laptop...

My previous car was an RS4, which had DI.

It's hard to tell from that video. It sounds exactly like my DI on my 1LE. Is it possible that AUDI did a much better job of insulation around the injectors than Chevrolet? I don't know about echoing off of walls but my DI noise is certainly noticeable.
