Removing the HVAC vent control rings

I've searched the forum high and low and google this so now I'm asking. Does anyone know how to remove the two center console temperature/fan control chrome rings?

I'm painting all the chrome/silvery interior pieces black chrome instead... most are reasonably easy to remove without any fear of damage, but I don't want to fiddle around and completely break the functionality of these two rings.

Thanks!

I’ve been thinking of doing this as well; curious if anyone knows how to get them out. Figured I’d end up pulling the dash to figure it out.

Go to P3 gauge web site, there is a video on removal.

Then you can carefully remove the trim ring

Hey thanks for the video, in this case I am talking about the two center rings that act as actual controls for the fan/temperature. I've been able to do the rest based on videos I've found, but these two center rings are a puzzle for me. I don't want to just wing it and give them a little pressure with a trim removal tool because it might completely destroy the mechanism depending on how they are attached.

Why would it be any different? It's just duct work. I bet the GM (OEM)
parts are the same for all four vents (you can CK that) Or just go out and give it a tug...lol. (gently of course).

I am curious also. Since the ring controls temp and fan speed in the middle vents are they attached to anything electronically. I haven't had the need to tear apart my center dash so my brain is wanting to know for future possible mods

This exactly, they are attached to something one way or another which is why I'm being careful here. Perhaps the whole unit can come out like the vents on the sides but these two in the center are more complex.

If I can take out the whole unit like the others I could just mask everything off and paint that way. No need to take the chrome part off, though masking around the inside edge where the chrome reaches the black would be annoying haha.

I've been lurking around threads like this for a long time and still have not found anyone that has removed them. My best guess would be to pull out the center console, remove that entire unit and take off the outer shell. That should give you a good view of how they are being held on. I'm sure, if it's like the rest of the parts, it's just some plastic clips. But pulling on them without knowing is always a gamble.

How do you own a 6g Camaro, and not understand the added complication of removing the center rings, opposed to the side vents lol?

Based on my progress with the other pieces I'll likely just be removing the two center units and masking them as I said up above. I tried removing the individual pieces of chrome/silver/aluminum from the side vents (after taking the whole unit out) and it just wasn't worth it.

I’d agree with one of the comments in this thread and not use a metal screwdriver but it appears they just pop off with prying equally around the circumference.
