Who has had a Methanol kit fail before ?

Have you ever had your Methanol kit fail ?

And was it game over for your motor?

The methanol pumps are notorious for not lasting long. Some guys buy two, and send one off to be rebuilt every year. If you’re just dependent on it for some cooling and a little extra fuel, you’re in good shape. But if you *need* it for fueling and it fails, your motor is probably not going to survive if it fails. Just my 2 cents.

I used meth in a 335i (using windshield washer reservoir). I had a small leak in the engine bay. Caught fire. 6k worth of damage using insurance and repair at the dealership. The fire melted my intake manifold, wire harnesses and lots of insulation. No damage otherwise.

Had I used a legit tank I don’t think it would’ve ever had a problem. It was good cheap power but haven’t used it since.

Agree. I would only consider using Methanol injection as a way to cool the intake charge. I would still make sure I had enough fuel pump and injector capacity regardless of running meth.

And I have also heard of meth injection systems malfunctioning and pumping all the meth into the engine causing hydro lock.

I just think it’s too risky.

Better to upgrade the fuel system and run E85.

Yes... and motor was fine.

So theres a few fallacies that give meth a bad rep, imho.

Its pretty easy to make it a fail safe...... just set your timing table to pull all the timing when your IATs go above xxx*F. Meth cools... so if the system fails, your iats go through the roof.... if you dont have timing, you will be fine.

Dont try to run a small amount of meth. Usually a 10/15 twin is a popular combo. It's enough to supplement a decent amount of fuel but also, if it shits the bed, your motor will go so lean that it will throw it in limp mode. It wont let you stay in it.

I’m going on two years with meth in my gen5. Tons of people run these systems with very few documented failures. I run Alky control and test my system every time I drive it. I have two sets of lights to indicate the system is functioning correctly.

As with any mechanical system it can fail, my experience has been nothing but great with Alky control and would not hesitate to use them again. I have a dedicated trunk mount system. I’m still on my original pump.

I'm using meth/water for cooling a bit of octane. If your motor insta-booms due to a MAF system failure that means you are using it as a bandaid to your primary fuel system. That is not how my system is being used. These are the people that have to actually worry, the rest of us not so much.

I know the AEM system I use checks the pump motor continuously to make sure it has not failed (open or short, even when not in operation), I have my low tank level set smartly, it will indicate if it isn't sensing whatever input you are using (MAF in my case). The LED indicator that comes with it informs you if any thing has failed. I can always do a quick test and stomp on it in a higher gear and make sure it sprays.

I have my entire system (minus solenoid and nozzles) on the interior of vehicle so there is no water/corrosion/etc to worry about from outside sources. I know some people put these pumps in there wheel wells and other exterior areas, no thanks.

So everything in this life is about risk Managment. If you run meth in a somewhat conservative manner using the failsafe features the kits are designed with they can be very reliable. If you want to throw a system in and forget it’s their, meth is not for you. It requires maintenance and and again comes with risk, but so does a lot of other sh!t in this life.

I lost two motors in my life, neither had anything to do with Meth. This doesn’t mean I’m buying a Tesla. I will tell you, I don’t like the constant maintenance checks and testing to make sure the system is functioning correctly, but I assumed this responsibility when I installed the system.

I ran meth on my daily turbo truck for 3 years with zero issues. I used it in the Winter/spring/summer and fall for 3 years. Who knows how many gals. never serviced it, never touched it. Dual nozzle. straight m1.

Camaro i have triple nozzle, straight m1. Just had an issue where it didnt spray under WOT and car went 15 afr at 15psi of boost. Good thing i was watching it cause it likely would have cause serious engine failure. I use meth as a fuel supplement, so when it doesnt work, my motor suffers.

I am still trouble shooting what the issue is but I also just purchased a flex fuel kit with hopes of decreasing my reliance on meth. Eventually and my end goal would be to go port injection and stay with flex removing meth entirely. This recent fluke really has me shook.

I had a pump fail but got lucky and didn't hurt the motor. On this car I just went ahead and bought port injection and can support 1500 hp on E85 so no meth is needed.

Using meth is like people going to the casino, you only hear when people win and never hear anything when they lose.
