My project this weekend

So I have a couple posts already about putting a ZL1 cluster into my SS. Mainly because of the color DIC but also the 200 mph gauge. Back in August I found a really good deal on a SS cluster with the color DIC so I jumped on it. It has been sitting in my garage since, and every now and again I am reminded of it and think about getting it programmed. I created a post that got no traction on what kind of software I could get to program myself. Two weeks ago, I got the idea that I could probably swap out the DIC screens themselves by taking the clusters all apart. Since I am sure that the screens hold NO information, just display it. So I am writing this to inform everyone, that you can't lol. I bought a cheap cluster ($20) from eBay out of a V6 that I did not know VIN or trim level, that I did not care about, to tear apart and see how easy it would be. Well, it took me about 20 minutes to get it all apart and seeing the screen was easily removable. After that I decided to get my SS cluster I had purchased back in August and tear it apart. Easy. Screens looked identical. Knew I had it figured out and was getting excited at this point. So I jump in my car and tear my cluster out, get it torn apart in 10 minutes to find....that the screens are different

The ribbon cable that attaches on the board is twice as big on my original. Which leads me to believe that the V6 one i ordered had a color DIC as well.

And the comparison.

Just wanted to share my experience because I have found no information on clusters really with pictures

Thanks

I could swear this has been done successfully before. That is how I got the idea to do mine eventually.

If I remember correctly, it required a dealer update to work properly. But I spent many of my younger years in a thick hazy cloud, so that could just be my memory playing tricks on me.

If that's correct, finding a dealer that has the ability to do this may be the hardest part. I know many dealers just don't want to bother with peoples projects. TC, if I find any info out on this I will update here for you.

EDIT: Ok, so it looks like GEN5DIY.com does this. You buy the color cluster from them, preprogrammed. All you need to do is let them know which you want, the 180mph or 200mph version. This can only be done on 2012+ cars, so it looks like I am out of luck. Apparently you have to call them, as it is not listed on their site.

Yeah I know it can be. I don't know if the dealer can. I called my local one and he said yes but I asked about changing the VIN on the new one and he said "we don't guarantee it will work" so it wasn't a definite. And I have seen the diy on gen5 but it's like 700 I think. And the new cluster I got was 50. And gen5 told me almost 400 I think to send them that one. So was just looking for a workaround basically lol

Your 2015 1LE doesn't have a color DIC? Or is this "SS" you speak of a different vehicle altogether?
