Odds of a 2019 Camaro with the A8 developing shudder?
Doing some due diligence on the 2019's v6's and curious what the current situation is with the A8 transmission shudder? Is it a small problem with a vocal online community, or is it bound to happen to most v6's?
Thanks! |

From what I was told by the dealership, the problem was a bad spec of fluid that in high heat/high humidity climates would become hydrophilic and absorb water, slowly destroying the torque converter. Should be corrected at the assembly line by now I would think...

I wouldn’t touch any GM vehicle with a A8. They’ve claimed to have a new fluid fix since 2017 and keep having to go back and try again. I sold my 16 SS A8 after the TC was replaced because I had lost confidence. Cut my losses and moved to a M6.

Call me lucky but I’ve owned both a 17 and 18 V6 A8 and a 19 I4 A8 and haven’t had any shudder issues in any of the 3 cars....

I usually trade after 15K miles and keep my cars about a year. I had zero issues of any kind with the 17 and 18 V6 A8 cars and so far no issues with my 19 after 2K miles, but I obviously can’t comment on long term issues...

I did the same thing with my 2017 Camaro RS with A8. Car was at the dealership more than I drove it for fluid flushes and TC replacement. I traded it in after that and later on bought my current M6. Love the M6 way more than the A8.

I pretty much feel the same way. We just had the flush done on our '17 2SS for the 3rd time. Of course this is the one they say will finally be "the one" to fix the issue. I will believe it when the issue doesn't return. I had my '12 Silverado in for routine service, and while waiting just looking around the showroom They had a new Silverado Trail Boss sitting there that looked pretty good. Salesman walks over and starts chatting, saying how good the truck is. I agreed, and opened the door to look inside. I then noticed it had the 8-speed transmission. I flat out told him, there is no way I was buying a GM vehicle with that transmission. He gave me the "surprised" look, so I told him why. I even told him that I thought GM was just kicking this can down the road long enough for the warranty to run out. 23,000 miles on the Camaro now, and it is back to driving like new again with this last flush. But when the warranty runs out and the issue comes back, then what? Nope, I will not buy any GM vehicle with that transmission right now.

Definitely still an issue, based on conversations with my local service department. They're getting the issue on Cadillacs that use the same transmission, although they stated that the first fluid change solves the issue "in the majority of cases". They also admitted that they've had to do TC changes on two this year because the fluid change wasn't enough. YMMV.

So the V8 cars will have the 10 speed, so no worries about 8 speed shudder for them, so that leaves the V6 and T4 cars.
Based on a TSB from GM, the factory started using the new fluid in the beginning of February (March for some other vehicles like the Colorado and Canyon) so if you are going to buy a 2019, look for one built after those dates. Otherwise, dealers have been instructed to swap out the fluid using the flush procedure on any inventory they have with build dates before then. So if you find a 2019 with a build date before then, make dang sure they have swapped the fluid on the car first. Seems to me this new fluid is working pretty well for the most part, unless the TC itself is too damaged. So either this fluid is going to fix it, or perhaps it just allows the car to run smoother longer before the shudder happens. We don't know. All I can say is that this fluid is the first fix from GM I've seen that has seemed to actually last without the shudder coming back.

Agreed. I've got about 5,000 miles on the new flush without the shudder.
