Manual help

Hey gear heads, I got questions pertaining the manual transmission (V6 1LT)

When downshift rev matching, do you blip the throttle before, after, or during gear switch?

Any tips on smoother gear transitions when switching?

Also any other techniques/advice that can be added to the bag of skills will be highly appreciated! Thanks!

The second you put the clutch in is when you blip the throttle for rev match and go into the gear you are downshifting to before the RPM drops after you blipping the throttle. The more you do it, the more you will release what gear likes what RPM it wants to be in.

Example (numbers I am posting are just examples not real numbers):

Going from 4 gear to 3rd gear. Put the clutch in, blip the throttle to 4k rpm and switch to 3rd gear.

Going from 3rd gear to 2nd gear. Put the clutch in, blip the throttle to 4.5k rpm and switch to 2nd gear.

Now what RPM it likes to be in, is something you learn when you start doing it. I can't say what RPM because 1: I drive an SS, 2: I have ARM now lol.

The more you do it, the more efficient you will become and the "faster" you will end up rev matching while downshifting. After you get used to rev matching, next thing to learn is heel to toe.

Use it ALL times. Whenever you downshift, you rev match.

OK, and what does it mean when everytime I release the clutch (after blipping/gear switching) the rear tires seem to lock up for a moment and produce this horrendous skreetch?

EDIT: Totally new to stick.

Hmm, are you making use the clutch is actually ALLLLL the way in when you release the gear AND after putting it in the next gear? There should be absolutely no sounds when shifting given there are no issues with the transmission.

Yes. The back tires lock up and the car ends up jerking forward in a heavy motion. I really don't know how to explain it. Do you release the clutch right away as soon as you downshift or slowly?

If it is doing that, you aren't rev matching correctly. You rev match so the car doesn't jerk.

You release the clutch the second you are in the gear you want to be.

That's probably why. When you release the clutch during upshift or downshift, do you release it instantly or gradually? I apologise for these dumb questions.

It's all good. There are those who are on the forums to help others even if it's something really complicated or very simple.

You release the clutch immediately. Except in first gear from a stand still. If you "drop" the clutch you will launch or stall depending on your throttle power haha.

Manual takes practice. I probably stalled a 1000 times when I first started learning when I was 12. Hell, when I picked up my evo years ago first time actually owning a manual vehicle and not having driven one for a few years... In Dallas rush hour traffic and all. It was hell but trial by fire is the best way to learn something realllly fast and reallllly well haha.

The more you drive it, the better you will get at it. Just practice it and literally watch some youtube videos. In a couple months it'll become a natural instinct. Keep in mind, don't feel horrible for stalling or any other "novice" mistakes. LEARN from it. Ask yourself why? What did I do wrong? Don't even feel bad because of your mistakes. Hell... Even if you have driven manual only for 20+ years (not me) you will still stall. It happens to everyone. Whether it happens once a year / once every few years or every time you drive is the only difference.

The pedals in my '06 mustang are close enough I can sort of roll the right edge of my foot onto it while pressing the brake. The camaro pedals are farther apart. Suggestions for technique?

Hmm, my gas pedal and brake pedals are pretty damn close for heel to toe but given I have ARM, no point for that technique as you can accomplish it by just shifting and touching the brake lol.

I need to try real heel/toe, I guess. In the 'stang, you can press the brake and catch the accelerator with the side (not the heel) of your right foot. I'm used to just rolling my foot right a bit. Still haven't got the hang of it in the camaro yet.

Can I buy different pedals that might reduce the spacing?

I am sure you can grab some pedals as they are most likely universal and install it yourself.
