GM should wait until the new Mustang and Challenger come out to make sure they Trump them. Kinda like Ford is trying to do with this stupid GT500, that's still going to lose around a track to a ZLE.

I love the delay - keeps the 6th gen around longer and makes a big case to have an LT5 powered Camaro.

BUT, adding time to the Gen6 definately gives room in the timeline between the C8 and Gen7 for either an LT5 Gen6 Camaro or a N/A Z/28. N/A Z/28??? WELL, rumors are the C8 will debut with a reworked LT1 (let's call it the LT2). The LT2 seems like a candidate for the Gen7 SS engine. But the next engine in the C8 lineup is rumored to be a 5.5L DOHC FPC N/A motor good for 600+ HP. That engine would make a great 6th Gen Z/28 motor. BUT, under the old 6th Gen schdule, it would be too late to the party to go in the 6th Gen. Now that the 6th Gen has been extended two years, that gives time for a N/A Z/28. Assuming the new C8 is a 2020MY, the 5.5L engine could debut as a 2021MY. That means the Camaro can have it in 2022 or 2023MY. This aligns nicely with the extended Camaro schdule. Plus, the Alpha chassis is already ahead of the competition, so there is no need to do backflips to get the Camaro on a new chassis. If it were up to me, I would upgrade the ZL1 to the LT5 engine in 2021MY with a refresh of the outer looks and inner tech, then debut the Z/28 with the 5.5L in 2022MY. I know that won't happen, but part of it could (either or). Better looks and MOAR POWWAR would sell better. Just sayin.... |

Still better than the current 2009 Challenger platform...not plans to replace it anytime soon.

C8 will have a derivative of the 4.2L Cadillac blackwing. The CAD drawings have been leaked for over a year showing the exact same engine architecture with low, side mounted turbos rather than the hot V setup in the front engine Caddy config. All other components (heads, block, belt routing) show identical dimensions and pathways as the Blackwing DOHC TT V8. The displacement for the C8 is what is in question. Also, we know that this will be a higher-model engine, the base C8 is getting an LT2 (hotter LT1 pushrod V8).

Here is why I said "to an extent". First of all, the Voodoo has a different firing order than a traditional FPC engine, and that effects vibration a bunch. So, it's an apples to oranges comparison. Also, the theoretical limit in terms of vibration for a inline 4 cylinder is 2.0L. We see tons of I4's with more than 2.0L, and they do that by introducing balance shafts. I'm not entirely sure here, but a balance shaft could be added to a 5.5L FPC engine, and smooth out the harshness, but you add to the rotating mass. That kind of defeats some of the purpose of an FPC engine. BUT, not if the ultimate end game is to slap some turbos on it (which the rumors are the 5.5L engine will go TT later). So, a 5.5L FPC with balance shafts seems like it may work. It won't spin up quite as fast, but it won't spin up slow either. But the reduced displacemet gives more room for fuel efficiency also. And the DOHC and FPC will allow it to put the peak HP up high in the RPM range. It's fun to speculate, but all that is pure conjecture on my part. AND, it's conjecture based off of rumors, so... |
