But, but… we're speculating on a car that hasn't even come out yet and completely guessing its 0-60 times on paper. In a lot of people's mind, the 2017 ZL1 is already killing the Hellcat consistently, and if it isn't, it's obviously a driver issue or a problem with the tire selection.* [/s]

(* = Derived from actual comments from folks in a thread on this site in which the Challenge Scatpack beat the SS at the drag strip.)

Let us have some fun.

The Challenger updates and Hellcat engine allowed Dodge to shine while there was a void as the Mustang and Camaro were transitioning to new platforms. It's even possible the HC is one reason the ZL1 is getting rolled out in the Camaro's second model year. Fact is, the HC is one "hell" of an engine but making power is the easy part and at its current starting MSRP of $65,190, the new ZL1 will make it look like an expensive, one dimensional antique.

Close indeed. Judging from Mr. Wyndham's and other passengers' feedback on the hot lap, I think one difference will be that the zl1 driver won't feel as if they're knocking on death's door if they lose a millisecond's concentration.

Its gonna be a close race
I think in a real drag race stock for stock the ZL1 will win most of the time simply do to the traction issues the hell cat challenger has from the lack of the proper size tires. It truly is an awesome car either way. Pretty impressive to see it hang with a Z06. Although, there are also youtube videos showing it the other way too. The challenger sounds like it has the scare the crap out of you factor which is what I always liked. I will say that my ZL1 is so controlled and well mannered that it's almost numb at times.

How do you fix that with 4,575 pound curb weight?

That lightning strike at 6-7 second mark looks amazing. ZL1 may actually accelerate faster than the Z06 at higher speeds so we shall see.

It will definitely be close. It may be down about 60-70hp, but it will also weigh anywhere from 300 to 600lbs. less than the HC twins. Depending on which HC is compared and which end of the spectrum the "200lbs. less" comment is from. Off the line, the ZL1 will probably win due to better stock tires. From a roll, I'd say the HC has the advantage.

A+ Chevy this new ZL1 will be a beast. The ball is now in Ford's 2017 GT500 and Dodge's Hellcats court.

I mean look, this whole comparison thing is fun and all, but if someone comes in here and says that a Hellcat is going to embarrass the ZL1, I think they better be ready to eat crow. This ZL1 is not just for turning and braking, it'll do 1320 just fine, and is probably going to be .1 faster on average than the Hellboat.

Is the hellcat an awesome beast, yes, and if you like it, go buy it, throw on some Drag Radials on - join the Hellcat forum and praise it all day long and talk about how it embarasses everything else amongst those who will drink the Kool-aid with you.

Is the ZL1's goal to be more than a straight line beast? - Obviously YES, the 5th gen proved that it was and GM proved they could improve upon 5th Gen success. if you like a car that can do more than one thing, then you will probably be more keen on the ZL1 just like the majority here in this forum. Take it to the drag with the tires you bought it with and compete with the Hellboat all day long.
