those transmissions were used in 100% street cars, trucks and vans, directly from gm, off the assembly line...for decades. have you ever owned a vehicle with either of those transmissions?

The TH400 (I've owned and driven them) was a standard GM equipment 3 speed tranny for many years before the advent of the transmission wars to see how many gears an auto tranny can have (4 then 6 then 8 and now 10 speed). The TH400 is a stout unit from the factory and today there are multiple shops who take the old stock units and build them up to handle big HP and TQ. I believe the drag racers of today are putting in these built TH400's not the stock units.

So, most people use a rebuilt GM factory TH400 3 speed that has been worked over to handle big power. Call that a racing transmission or call it a factory TH400 that has been rebuilt - same thing.
