Non-1LE Rear Differential Service, 1SS or 2SS
I have a 2021 2SS A10. I have seen the recommendation to change the rear differential fluid for 1LE at 1,500 miles and then again shortly thereafter, as shavings accumulate on the plug from break-in.
What is the recommendation for the rear differential on the non-1LE variant? This vehicle is not planned to be tracked and is a typical daily-driver. Thank you! |

I changed my differential at 8000 miles because it was making noise. The fluid that came out was like black goo. There wasn't really any evidence of sparkly metal in the fluid but the drain plug had a little stack of metal filings attached to it. It was super easy to change. If you have any doubts, just do it.

I changed mine at 1500 miles as well as the tranny fluid(M6) and the motor oil. Dealer told me I was early on the diff and tranny. It’s my car I can do what I want as long as I don’t go over the factory recommendations. If the mod strikes change it. It’s not a bad thing to change it.

It’s in your owners manual.

It's easy to do with a hand pump affixed to the bottle, it's worth it for piece of mind which is why I did it recently but my 1LE had 34K and no track days so I really didn't see it as being too necessary. My OE fluid was black and the drain plug was less caked with crud that photo's of others that I've seen.

Thank you all for your replies and descriptions of the fluid condition at your mileages!
I wanted to get an idea of the service interval that other enthusiasts were following. I will perform well in advance of the schedule maintenance specified in the owners manual (at 45,000 miles), but didn't want to perform it unnecessarily too soon either. Thanks again. |

I did mine at 1,500 and the fluid looked just fine... The magnetic plugs were quite clean too with just a little buildup.
Personally, I think it is worth doing a drain/fill at least once in the first 5,000 miles or so. Then just follow the manual. No need to do it often unless tracking and it requires it. That being said, it is very easy to do. Half the work of an oil change, really. Just get a cheap $8 hand pump that connects right on top of the bottle to fill and that's all you need along with a socket wrench and oil catch pan. Since it takes 1.2 quart of fluid, I was left with 0.8qt or so in my second bottle of fluid, so I will likely just buy another single quart and do it again at 5,000 mile or so and then be done with it for a long time (until 30K or something). Again, it's so easy and relatively cheap to do, why not. |

So I now have a 2020 2SS A10 after previously having a 2016 SS. At the time I had the 2016 there was some talk of a change in recommended diff fluid than what the manual called for. Fast forward 5 years to now, what is the current GM recommended fluid for the SS differential?

If you buy the oil pictured by Trochoidal - it has the friction modifier in it.
Note the fine print on the bottle just below the oil weight.
