A8-confusion.

I have dealt with the A8 shudder and was debating replacing the factory unit with an aftermarket one. I heard circle-d had a good unit. I am also confused with the stall speed? I have only owned stick cars in the past. If I could get some guidance as to what stall means? I would appreciate any feedback from you guys who know. Thanks in advance for all help. Happy driving today to all..

Stall speed is the term used to indicate how high the converter will flash when you go WOT or brake stall the converter. Normally a 3600 stall will let you hold the brake and increase RPM up to 3600rpm before it tries to take off. That doesn't mean it wont accelerate at a lower rpm, but it will feel more sluggish as the converter is slipping at a high percentage below the stall speed. Ideally you match the converter to the engines power band, somewhere around peak torque is ideal but you might not want a converter that loose. I used 3600 as an example being that is a good "all around" converter for a bolt-on NA car. Call circle D and tell them what you have and are trying to achieve. They will set you up.

Thanks King LT1 for all the information. I'll be giving them the 1300 dollar call.

No problem...Fwiw those 1300.00 converters went on sale for 899.00 last year around black Friday. So if you can wait till fall you can save a bunch of coin more then likely.

WOW!! I will be looking for that thanks KING LT1. If the stall speed is say 3400. Can I still drive around with the trans shifting normally? or will the stall speed make it have to get up to 3400 before shifting from 3-4 or 6-7 speed. Thanks in advance

It makes it shift later that's for sure but a good tuner can help it. I have a 4000+ stall in mine and before it was tuned it was almost annoying to drive on the street but after tuning it isn't too bad. You can drive it on the street fine but the stall is going to change the characteristics of it by a decent margin but you gets used to it.

Yes, it will just take more throttle input and rpm to get the car to accelerate at the same rate as the stock converter until you reach stall speed or the converter locks.
