Rear end howl on decel
Hi again..lol 950 miles now.. Just went through a tug of war to get me pulling problem fixed.. Seems good so far after 2 front tires. Now for my next issue. The rear end howls on decel. How many have had issues? Not taking back to the same dealer after the experience I just had with them. Will finish breaking it in then take it back to the dealer I bought it from. Just wondering how many people have some rind and pinion noise?

I believe whine on decel is backlash to tight. Whine on accel the backlash is too loose.

Mine has a whine on decel when in the 60 to 70 mph range. It happens when slightly letting up from nuetral throttle. I am not sure what can be done about it.

Try doing some figure 8s in a parking lot, if you get the sound there also it it probably needs the service bulletin performed.

Yea, Figure 8's won't do anything for a ring and pinion set up issue.. If I was having noise from the limited slip I would

A lot of the noise seems to come from the clutch packs. They replaced my ring and pinion because the backlash was off but that didn't clear the noise. After they performed the service bulletin it went away.

the noise I am having is a ring and pinion noise.. Been setting up rear end gears for over 25 years.. Clutch Packs will never make noise in a straight line

Hence why they do the figure 8's for the service bulletin, good luck it took me three trips to resolve it. It seems they have two different issues going.

Yep.. figure eights again will do nothing for a ring and pinion noise. Hence that is why I have said all along it is a ring and pinion noise.. Hopefully I get a service writer and tech who are compitant the first time and will see the obvious noise for what it is.. I think they will.. Thinking positive

Jackalope you're not alone!
Definition of "Irony"...owner of driveline shop for over 20 years...has set up over a thousand differentials...orders a brand new ZL1 and gets one with one of the noisiest ring and pinions I have ever heard coming out of the factory! The car made noise from mile one! Heard it the first time I drove it. Of course, if it makes noise, the only two things you are guaranteed is that it will either stay the same or get worse...they never get better. Car currently has about 1800 miles on it. Jackalope is right...ring and pinion "whine" or "howl" is not to be confused with "figure eight chatter" or a "growl" when tuning. Gear noise has been somewhat prevalent with the manual cars from what I've been told. There is another member on this forum that didn't get a quiet set of gears until his third set. I'm lucky, one of my old employees is a tech at a GM dealership and I'm going to have him replace my gear set under warranty...he knows what he's doing! I'm probably not going to do it until spring as the car is getting close to being pickled for the winter. I'll be curious to see how yours gets handled. Good luck! |

I am trying to figure yout if mine is the same thing. Do you guys hear this at all speeds? Does harder and lighter decel make the noise change?
