Insurance Question - new driver
My kids are turning 16 soon. I own an SS and a Honda S2000. Are there ways of mitigating insurance rates by disallowing them the use of these vehicles? First kid wants to get his learners permit in the next 6 months.
I'm assuming that if they are eligible drivers, the rates would go through the roof. Thanks for any advice. |

If they live in the same household as you, your rates will be higher even if you don't have them listed as the primary drivers.

Thanks. I have 2 minivans as well. Was going to sell one and buy some sort of stodgy 4 door that would be cheap to insure. Also wondering if maybe I can title the sports cars in a relatives name with me as a named insured. Would this work?

I have 2 daughters, 16 and 20, both are insured to drive my 2020 2SS (however, they don't know that), there was no way to take them off of that car... (Farmers Insurance)...

Thanks. Can I ask how much more per month you pay? Also, I assume girls are still cheaper to insure than boys? |

You can exclude certain members of the (family) household from driving a particular car which will lower the rate. Basically you're signing a document stating that person won't drive it.
Just remember if one of those that are excluded drives the vehicle and gets in an accident you'll have no coverage no matter fault. |

2007 Hyundai Santa Fe (my 16 year old is the primary) 2012 Hyundai Sonata SE (My DD, I am the primary driver) 2016 Hyundai Sonata Sport (My wife is the primary driver) 2019 Hyundai Elantra Value Edition (My 20 year old daughter is the primary driver) 2020 Camaro 2SS (I am the primary driver (52 years old) Yes, if Hyundai made a Camaro I would have bought it... The Hyundai's have been absolutely great, low maintenance, extremely durable and low maintenance and very low parts cost and easy to work on with a fantastic warranty... My 2007 Santa Fe with 140k miles still burns less than 1/4 qt between oil changes... I had a 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan that went through nearly 5 qts between 3k oil changes (at 70k miles)... I will NEVER buy a Chrysler/Dodge product ever again... I was extremely leary the first time and should have known better...

Why in the world would you let a first time driver in a SS. Buy a beater. But Dad I was only showing my friends what it would do.

Depending on your insurance company, you may be able to exclude them.

Check with your insurance company about the rates and even shop around with other insurance companies to find the best rates that you and the family can afford.

I have a 17 and 18 year old (boy and girl) in the household. 4 cars and 4 licensed drivers in the household. When my son (younger one) turned 16 I had a newer 911 and a Camaro V6 in the fleet. My initial quote went up $500/month on top of what I was paying, because they defaulted my son on the 911 (most expensive vehicle). After some discussion we got that fixed! I no longer have the 911, but now have a LT1 which is classified as an SS according to insurance. I pay around $4000/year for all 4 drivers covered on all 4 cars. This is with Liberty Mutual and zero tickets or accidents by anyone. I am pleasantly surprised with those rates considering two teenagers and an SS on the policy.
I see you are in Chicago. I am sure that won't make it any cheaper. I suggest talking to your insurance company and see what the best configuration might be. If they won't work with you then shop around - it is definitely worth it. I did and changed insurance companies and it saved $1500/year. My previous insurance company couldn't match the rates. |
