anyone rocking transmission fluid put in your car prior to q1 2019 really should get their trans fluid completely changed with the new blue label stuff (not the black label - which is still sold in some places)
Regardless of if you experience the shake. once you start shaking enough to feel it in more than just your foot (Slightly) ...you are potentially permanently damaging your torque convertor. At that point, you wont know until after you do the change anyway. It's a fluid hypdrophilia issue ...not manufacturing quirk. All of the A8's had the same fluid before 2019 (including those that got new fluid prior to 2019). The only variable is how long until it exhibits symptoms. |

Car is back from the dealer, had to "remind" them that TSB 18-na-355 says that customer reporting the shudder is all the required diagnostics
They did the full fluid exchange exactly as outlined and so far it seems perfect. Most noticeable time it did it was on the highway at steady speed like 65-75 MPH, made sure to do that on the way home and it was perfectly smooth.

The last TSB 16-NA-175 did not have that wording and the tech would have to replicate it on a test drive, most would just blame AFM (v4) mode as causing the problem you are experiencing Good luck

I only have about 14,500 miles on my car. While the trans shifts are not ideal, they seem the same as they did on "day one."
BUT, if it is recommended to have the fluid updated regardless, how much of a fight will it be to have this done under the appropriate TSB? I'm in the north end of the L.A County area. Are there any dealerships around that can actually be recommended??? I'm willing to drive to a dealer who is not going to screw up my car! What are the chances of having a preemptive repair (torque converter and updated fluid) done with no symptoms at the moment? It is known issue with TSBs etc. Last edited by LtColumbo; 05-15-2021 at 09:49 PM. |

I got my 2016 new in Dec 2018 (awesome deal). Had shudder so bad that it felt like the ignition was getting flicked on and off rapidly. I suspect permanent damage. I think I got the most recent “fix” in early 2020 at 20k miles. It was perfect for a while, but now at 35k I have quite noticeable shudder. At about 45+ mph in highest gear (lowest RPM possible for constant speed) when I apply power, it shudders. At speed, the auto likes to be around 1800 RPM. A bit low I would think... and the torque converter thinks too apparently.
When it’s cold, it’ll shift a bit harder than I like. It seems to wait to want to down shift when accelerating after constant speed, and sometimes just chills at 2000-2500 rpm for 20 seconds before upshifting when at speed. Sometimes I think that holding in lower gear is the tranny being somewhat smart like when on cruise in hilly terrain. Anyone know where to go for non-biased news on the class action? Once warranty is up I’ll get it reprogrammed, but can the mechanics be truly fixed? |

Shift strategies are drive mode specific, plus there is a separate performance shift mode. If you think it should behave differently, the dealership can trigger a relearn, but it's hard to tell whether or not there is an actual problem here—if it holds gears longer at 2.5k rpm prior to upshifting even in tour or snow/ice mode, perhaps you are applying a bit more throttle than it considers necessary. That's the only legit case I can think of, because these autos are very "upshift happy" in order to improve fuel economy.

Dropped mine off at the dealer for a fluid change. Had to argue with the service writer and shove the service bulletin in front of him. He tried the old "If they can't duplicate it" BS. I told him all he needed was me saying it, and it was the second time I was bringing it in for the same issue, and wasn't playing that game anymore. He didn't say another word and just wrote it up.
Finger's crossed! -Geoff
