Stock Wheel Exploded
I got off work at 2AM last night and on my drive in I hopped on the interstate as usual and could visibly see an accident off in the distance with one policemen responding, no EMT, and a few cars pulled off to the shoulder. I slowed down and merged to the fast lane. I was less than half a mile away from the accident when I hear what sounds like I ran over accident debris and a tire explosion. I pull over and inspect the rear passenger where I lost air pressure and see nothing out of the ordinary other than a flat. I did not have a spare so I drove it to the nearest Discount tire and parked it until 8AM this morning when they opened.
I went back to inspect the car and get the new tires ordered. Once they pulled the wheel off I was greeted with this bad boy. https://photos.app.goo.gl/4uSPKHPLjEzVpke88 I proceeded to buy 4 tires to swap on a set of wheels I had been waiting to put on and also buy one more tire to put on the wheel once I get a replacement. Does anyone know what my best option would be here to getting that wheel replaced? Can I contact a chevy dealer and would they be able to provide a replacement wheel at a discounted price? Could I contact my insurance and file a claim for any of this? So far, I've spent about $1200 roughly for tires + whatever I spend to find a replacement OEM wheel. I forgot to mention that these are the stock '16 SS 5 spoke wheels. EDIT: How do I post pictures on here? |

There are replacement OEM wheels available from various vendors at prices that are a lot lower than the dealer.

You might be able to get the wheel and tire replaced with your Insurance company but not sure. Call and talk to a claims specialist and ask if the items are covered under your policy. Other than that I think you are on your own covering the expense for the new tire and wheel! Good luck!

That's definitely a road hazard issue. Looks like whatever you ran over went right through the wheel. It might be covered under your comprehensive insurance, at least the wheel might be, probably not the tire. Unless you purchased a wheel and tire package when you bought the car, that would cover it.

I think the pic was taken from the inside, a spoke with markings/serials is visible near the top left. The chunk of material seems to have been blown upwards into the wheel's center area.

You got something in your tire.
Metal is bent up to the inside of rim. |

I once had a tire impaled by a socket wrench extension that was 6" long. It stopped hard against the inside of the rim, leaving about an inch of the extension protruding. This happened at a low speed, probably less than 20 mph, and the wheel wasn't damaged. Oddly, this happened just a quarter mile away from my go-to tire specialist, so I slowly limped to it before the tire was completely deflated. I can see how something similar could destroy a wheel at high speed. |
