Ok so if you haven't ever owned a car with an OLM, this could be disconcerting.

I will openly admit, with a Masters Degree in Engineering, an Undergraduate degree in Engineering with a minor in automotive engineering, Mrs. Number 3 rarely lets me forget the 15 minutes I spent under the hood looking for the dipstick in my Audi S4. Yes, reading the owners manual resulted in the knowledge that this car did NOT in fact have one. It did have a level sensor that was accessed through the DIC.

So yes the owners manual answers that, but if you come here every day, why not ask.

Hopefully the OP learned a bit about his and other GM cars and hopefully he isn't chased off by the ribbing not knowing.

Ignoring all the crap everyone is gining the op.

I have about 3500 miles on my car at this point.

Did my first oil change at 700 miles. My car info is already saying 30% life. My guess with these measurements is that the system is calculating for 5000 mi oil changes. And, if that isn't the case then it has to do with how aggressively I drive my car.

Did you reset the oil life when you did the oil change @ 700 miles?

It makes me wonder if GM added an algorithm to address the fact that the first oil change window will be more dirty due to engine break in, thus possibly the need to change it earlier...

The OLM in my Silverado High Country calculated for 7500 miles average. I believe it's the same on the Camaro.

So what matters most when changing oil. Time? or Miles?
I ask because I bought my car in 2016 and today its displaying an oil life of 15% which would be my 3rd oil change. I only have nearly 8k miles. Yup you read that correctly.... 8k miles. Ive been using the Metro to work from 2016 to 2018 March.
Now I drive to my new job. My love for the Camaro got me the car during 2016 as it was my dream car yet I hardly drove at all. don't hate...

When I was doing a lot of highway driving the OLM on my 09 G8 GT would regular exceed 10k miles before indicating a change was necessary. Soon after gm revised the olm on newer cars to shorten the time between changes. Now, by also factoring in time, they have further shortened it for most people.

My UOAs always came back in good shape so it’s hard not to wonder if these short change intervals are actually benefiting the motor or just driving people to the dealership more often.

If I where a salesman than yes shorten the time between intervals no matter what is driven. On more educated quess it is known when you crack open fresh oil and run it on seasonal equipment such as construction stuff or your lawn mower it is best to change out before the new season. Engines are typically not sealed enviroments and breath and oils do age which are exposed to the elements and run times. So thus is possible that GM may skew that into the interval. Dont know... just words and shooting from the hip. Its safe to say...most will agree no more than 7k or not exceed 6 months is good practice in shade tree guess work..

You're covered if you follow the DIC and document with work performed by a mechanic shop or dyi with recepits to back it up and resetting the oil back to 100%.
