6 Speed Manual Differences LT1 vs Lt4
Hey guys,
My apologies for posting a noob question, but I have searched and searched and cannot find the exact answer I am looking for. Are the 6 speed manual transmissions the same for the LT1 & Lt4 equipped engines? Also are they T56 (Super) Magnums or TR6060's? I've seen conflicting articles saying they are one and the other. I would think they are the same trans themselves but that the LT4 would have beefier components? When looking at GM Performance site for component purchasing, they only offer the M6 for LT1 package (rated to 700tq/HP) but only the A8 for the LT4? Possibly more so because of the wiring harnesses they have? I have an LT4 and A8 already but am wanting the M6 for tunnel fitment reasons and figured if I could buy a lift out LT1/T56 Magnum (or TR6060) package, I could use the LT1 (with spare blower) and the LT4's A8 in a different build I've got going on. Thank you in advance for any help or links you can provide. |

to the forums, Vtrbandit
I have the 8L90 8-speed auto, but based on the 2018 service manual and Tremec's website, the Camaro uses 1 variant of the TR-3160 and 3 different variants of the TR-6060, with different torque limits and gear ratios. The option codes for these variants are M13, MM6, MJK and MH3 for the LTG/LGX, LT1, LT4 (ZL1) and LT4 (ZL1 1LE), respectively. Their parameters are as follows: Code:
Product RPO Max Torque Forward Gear Ratios TR-3160 M13 295 lb-ft 4.40 2.59 1.80 1.34 1.00 0.75 TR-6060 MM6 500 lb-ft 2.66 1.78 1.30 1.00 0.74 0.50 TR-6060 MJK 650 lb-ft 2.29 1.61 1.21 1.00 0.82 0.54 TR-6060 MH3 650 lb-ft 2.29 1.61 1.21 1.00 0.82 0.68

Thanks Arpad for that info!
Without having seen a service manual, every search I pulled up merely references a "manual 6 speed" available for all of the Camaro engine types but never touches on their respective capabilities. It also makes a little more sense now too that GM Performance would only offer the T56 Super Magnum for sale with their crate motors vs thebTR6060. The T56M allows for more customization with shifter and mounting locations along with both electronic and mechanical speedometer outputs. Im now understanding the TR6060 is more vehicle specific whereas the T56 Magnum is more setup for custom applications. I just didn't know whether the LT1/LT4 ran the Tr6060 or not and what Hp/Tq ratings they each had. Now to understand the limitations of stock transmissions with power adds... Thanks again This article helped line out those difference details: https://tremec-blog.com/the-differen...-6060-6-speed/ |

You're welcome. I'm far from being an expert, but happy to help if I can. Thanks for the link, too, I knew next to nothing about the Magnum.

The M13 (TR-3160) does not have the skip shift. I have one in my V6 RS.

I have a 2018 ZL1 1LE and it shifts like butter...absolutely best shifting car I ever had esp. for 650 hp.
I had a 2011 Challenger SRT,same trans, and it was night and day. Second gear could be a real bitch to get into cold so I used to skip it. I still liked the trans but the Camaro is in a different league. Try to figure out what they did to our cars to make it so much better and go with that. They really got the shifter figured out.

I wonder why GM speced different gearing for the ZL1 and ZLE M6? I can't imagine that you would get into 6th gear on any road course. Maybe the increased drag created by the ZLE aero necessitates a little lower (higher numerically) 6th gear to prevent lugging the motor at highway speeds in 6th gear?

ZLE has a 325/30/19 which is 26.7" tall
ZL1 has a 305/30/20 which is 27.2" tall

They used the .68 on the zle becausewith 18” tires, that gear is useable on a track from what I read.
