Wireless CarPlay

Does this run as smooth as when your iPhone is connected by a cable? Especially using maps/navigation?

I want to know, I’m thinking about just getting the dongle that plugs into the USB port and enables wireless CarPlay. It’s like $100.

Drove a 3 series with it. At first I didn’t know. Plugged in my phone and went about my business. When I came back I turned on the car and was about to plug in the phone when Apple Maps was up..... was shocked and thought it was cool.

Also thought to myself....what if I need to charge my phone. Bum dum tsh!

I'm struggling to understand why this is even something that interests people.

Running CarPlay / AndroidAuto wirelessly leaves the phone in a state where this is a significant demand on the battery and it will drain very quickly if not charging. Wireless charging in vehicles is not typically high-output (fast charging) and often can't actually increase a charge level if the phone is drawing on the battery with things like location services. On top of everything else, larger footprint devices seldom fit into the spaces the manufacturers provide for wireless charging to even be an option (not to mention that most devices in use don't support wireless charging).

If you're going to have to plug the phone in to charge anyhow, where is the benefit here?

They'll learn when they go on a hour long trip and their phone is nearly dead when they get to where they're going and leave behind the most opportune time to charge their phone before needing it on them.

I only see one use case for wireless Carplay / Android Auto that I would enjoy. On those short trips to the corner store or up to the grocery store, I always plug in so I can use Waze for police/traffic alerts and listen to something other than the MyLink versions of Pandora or iHeart.

Would be nice to just jump in the Camaro, drop my phone on the magnetic mount and use Android Auto without pausing to plug in. On longer trips I will always plug in anyway.

That said, I've built the habit pattern of plugging in seat belt, then phone, and don't even think about it anymore.

Wireless is not much value add for me.
