subtle whine when cruising

The main stretch of road I used has recently been paved fresh with blacktop so it is very quiet. I now hear a whine occasionally. I cannot feel anything when the sound occurs. I cannot reliably reproduce it. It sounds high in frequency, but very quiet. If I had to guess, I would say it is coming from the rear, but I cannot be certain of that. Any suggestions? I only notice it when I am holding my speed, but it could be happening all the time.

Different areas around here make my tires make all sorts of different noises at different speeds. There's a stretch of road I take to get to the highway (45 spd limit) that was paved last year. I noticed the same thing but only on that part of the road. If I go a little faster it's there but slightly different; slower can't hear it. My guess would be the road surface since that's the variable that has changed.

I will try to see if the sound correlates with the same section of road.

Might be coming from rear diff especially if you have not changed the diff fluid. I changed mine out at 1,500 miles and has never whined but some who have not has encountered the whine.

Your passengers 'cause you won't let them drive?
