Warranty Question - Chip or Tune

I'm sure this topic has been discussed before, but after sorting through 4 pages I haven't found a thread for it.

I've got a 2020 Camaro 2SS. My boss recently got an M3 and he's been doing some modding and its been giving me the bug.

I've read that tuning adds an iteration to the flash counter and that the dealer can track that and as such, it voids the warranty. I've read marketing materials for chip companies saying that it doesn't have the same impact and that if the chip is removed from the OBD port, that the car is restored to stock and there is no trace. As such, it doesn't void the warranty. Can you guys please share your knowledge and experiences on this topic.

Thanks!

They will find the tune and your powertrain warranty will be toast. It's all a marketing gimmick don't fall for it. If your fine with blowing the warranty mod away and have a competent tuner tune it don't waste your time on these so called "chips".

Not true at all. It still leaves a mark.

Intake and axleback exhaust. That's about all you can do. Don't let tuning companies tell you otherwise.

I had no problem modding my 5th gen Camaros....but I am leaving my 6th gen alone. At least until she's paid for. Mfg's have gotten pretty savvy, I don't believe that chipping won't leave a trace.
...Do so at your own risk/peril......

Agreed. I bought this car in part because of its kick ass track warranty. I won't be messing with my ability to cash in on that until it's close to over.

I left my warranty intact for all of 15 days. Roll the dice. Show some confidence in your purchasing decision

Keep this in mind. Even if, and that's a huge if, that plug in chip tuner doesn't leave a trace on the flash counter, if something breaks in the engine, I believe, the ECM records a "freeze frame" of what was going on when it happened. All GM needs to see is that the parameters were changed, end of warranty.

I'm so debating on just going FBO and tuning. My previous engine blew at 18.5k miles (bad rod bearing) and i'm sitting at 20k miles thinking what are the chances two engines could blow, just mod it lol. But the new engine obviously has a 5 year 60k mile warranty which is holding me back. Tough choices ha ha

I can tell you that my oil pump let go at FBO while street tuning with Pray. I was at 10k miles so if you like your warranty keep it. Luckily I had it already planned out to be completely rebuilt and had most the parts already. Ended up being 12k after parts and labor so these motors aren't really cheap when they decide to let go.

Same, I tuned it a week after I bought it, but it only had 18 months left on the factory 3/36 warranty. Nothing happened as yet, and I still got warranty, service bulletin, recall, and one warranty repair handled by a dealership with the tune on board. Glad I didn't break the engine! Now the supplemental aftermarket warranty is kicked in and nobody cares what the hell I've done with the engine...

Yeah i looked up the GM part number for the engine, and it was $10,000, and then add on 17 hours of labor (or so they say lol).
