Dealer Blowing Off Giving Order Number

Is it normal to keep getting blown off by the dealer about giving out my order number? I ordered it about a month ago now and the salesman said I'd get the number as soon as the finance guy put the order in, but he couldn't do it now because he was at lunch, so therefore didn't take my money. They did however take my deposit about 4pm that same day, emailing me telling me GM had accepted the order and then basically refuse to give me the order number. I've emailed the salesman and the finance guy all to no response, I've even gone to the dealer to hear the "He's out to lunch" BS... even at 9 am. Is this normal? Is there anything I can even do, as they told me the $2k was non-refundable.

They should have that info right when they enter the build in the system (GM Workbench I believe it's called). If it was already "accepted" as they claim, they must have had an allocation which furthers the fact they must have an order number. It also usually is not the finance guy....the guy who builds the car should have that (generally your salesman).

Interesting. Yeah, that's exactly how they put it... maybe I'll just bother them daily until the car actually arrives.

if they cant give you a order number tell them you want your 2k back pretty easy...i hate stealership games

Get your deposit back and go to another dealer if you can. Your salesman should have given your order number before you left the dealership. If you decide to go another dealer on your way out tell the finance guy quit eating so much.

Thanks guy. I will actually probably do that today... a few 21's are popping up at dealers and will have to drive right past that one on the way.

I would give them an ultimatum. Confirmed order number printed out or refund the 2K. Non-refundable is bullshit. Tell them you will report it to your bank as theft/fraud.

They can claim the deposit is non-refundable all they want, but they cannot take your money if they never deliver. As others have said, as soon as they enter the order into the GM Workbench, the order number is generated, even if it's just in 1100 state (pending order).

Demand a copy of that report, because that is the only way for you to verify they entered your order correctly - right color, right trim, right packages/options.

If your salesman won't help you, get a new salesman or go up the leadership tree at the dealership until they provide the info and/or a refund. If they don't value your business enough to provide you that confirmation, go find someone who does.

I had this issue for months when I ordered. They didn’t want to put the order in until they got an allocation. Eventually threatened to cancel and they placed the workbench order.

Sounds pretty sketchy to me… I ordered a car on August 29th and received a copy of the workbench order and order #. Gave a $500 deposit and have been stuck at 1100 status ever since. I was under the impression that they had an open allocation when I placed the order but obviously that wasn’t the case. Now with the shutdown who knows how long it will be.

I’m pretty annoyed, but at least I have an order #.

As everyone else says, they're playing you, time to get creative or take your money back.

Back when I ordered my 2018, the salesman gave me the order code the moment the workbench sheet came out of the printer and he handed it to me. If you don't have an order code, you basically haven't ordered the car.

Some do like to play that game of withholding info, though. I put mine in on 8/14 and starting on 8/19 have asked repeatedly for the order number with no success. Today I finally chewed my sales rep out enough that he gave me my printout with the order number and it shows an input date of 8/16. He could have made it so much easier on both of us if he'd just done that the first time I asked.

Of course, now I'm sitting in 1100 status and dependent on them to assign an allocation to the order before it goes anywhere else - but at least I can follow up on it without relying on him!
