First dealer service (wrong filter)
Hello all
Just the got the first service done at the dealer/workshop where i bought the car last year. Normally i would do it myself, but for me to still have the guarantee on the car, i was “forced” to use the dealer´s workshop :( I askede them if they had the original filter, yes no problem they Said. I even had a PF64 in the trunk for them to use. But they had it all they said, the service got done, i drove home and found this under my car They have used a PF48E !!! My question is, am i Safe with this filter or should i ask them to replace it with a PF64. |

This is what I found on the InterWebs...
Important: The PF64 and PF63, which is commonly confused by many in the automobile service industry as an ACDelco® PF48 and/or PF48E , because both oil filters have the same appearance and oil can size. However these oil filters are not the same and have different internal bypass valve opening pressure specifications (PF48/PF48E = 15 PSI (100 kPa), PF64/PF63E = 22 PSI (150 kPa). https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...d-of-pf64.html |

The internal bypass valve is the only difference. The 64 has a 22psi bypass where the 48 has 15. You should be fine, but some people think the lighter bypass lets more junk bypass the filter...The 48 has been used on Corvettes for quite some time.

OP, That is really careless that the dealer got it wrong! I'd be hesitant to have them do any other work on it.

For most of us who take care of our cars, the bypass valve never opens. The rating of that valve is the pressure differential across the filter media (called "PSID" by manufacturers). Pressure across the filter is related to: 1) Oil temp/viscosity 2) flow rate 3) the extent to which the filter media is clogged. Here is some data for a Purolator filter: https://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forum..._vs._PSID_Data As someone else said, "If you are cold starting your car in Alaska AND immediately high-revving the engine AND your filter is very old you MAY get the bypass valve to open." |

I'd get the correct one if it were me. The bypass, which *should* never open if you change your filter correctly, could still let unfiltered oil thru if it does open.

no need to worry. bypass value pressure only works when the filter material is so clogged it need to bypass the filter. If you are changing your oil and filter on schedule your filter will never use the bypass valve.

Whenever I go to the chevy parts counter to get my oil filter they always advise the computer recommends the PF48 but I know to get the PF64 so that's what I get. I think GM might be confusing the dealerships with two different oil filter recommendations.

GM service bulletin regarding oil filters for the LT1 and other GM engines.
I agree the chances of the bypass opening, even at the PF48's low pressure setting, is slim. I agree that it is more troubling that the dealership installed the wrong filter.

I do my own now. It’s so easy on this car. I don’t trust dealerships.

you dont have to use the dealer to keep your warranty. they say you should keep your receipts for parts but unless your oil analysis comes back with junk oil you will be fine. just change the filter yourself. no need to take your car to a tech thats pissed off that he has to redo it.

Stuff like this happening is the reason I didn’t use my two free oil changes. It wasn’t worth it to me.

Well I see it that if something goes wrong with your Camaro the dealership can be held responsible since they installed the wrong filter. I would though drop by and talk to the Service Advisor and express your concerns!
