if not, how do people make wheels fit that aren't "compatible"?

Those should fit. The fronts will be tucked into the fender wells pretty good with a 35mm offset. Backs will be too at 8.5"w w/35mm offset. But they should fit.

Go to tiresize.com and you can play around with their offset calculator. If you know what's on the car now, you can plug in the existing info and new info to see how the changes effect various dimensions.
