PRAY ported MSD vs. Pray ported stock IM at the track

This testing was not done same night at the track so it isn't apples to apples. But the car was set up the same, it was the same track, and the weather was the same. The differences besides the IM's is that the MSD had the stock T-stat but the dual 3" exhaust with cut outs. I did not dyno the car after I did the exhaust so I don't know what it was worth. The stock ported IM had the stock cat back but a 180* T-stat. Also when I re-dynoed the car the other day it was down about 8rw over my previous best MSD runs. I got some of that back with tuning. What this demonstrates to me is the stock ported IM gets out much harder and will 1/8th mile with the MSD but the MSD is worth a couple hundredths on the top end and a mph'ish in the 1/8 and 1/4. Without a true back to back it looks like the ported stocker and the ported MSD are a wash on my car.

The ported MSD numbers are on the top and the ported stock IM is on the bottom.

The image is not coming up. I was thinking of trying a stock ported IM to maybe help with my 60' if they are a wash anyway. I can sometimes get low 1.8s but they are a bit rare for me. People say there is a hesitation in the M6 launch.

If I can 1.46 tonight we are going to see some pretty good numbers. I have to change the diff fluid when I get home and check my plugs.

I have to get with Circle D today and hit them up about the best way to launch this converter. I have been brake stalling to 3K and letting it go. Worked great on my ported IM. It isn't working so great with the MSD. Maybe leaving at a lower will flash the converter harder and shock the tires better? I don't really know.

Yes Sir, I am back up and running in a somewhat degraded fashion. I stayed where I was at but did have to take another job that requires much more of my time. I am working through it.

Thanks for doing the math and giving a clear picture of what was going on with the averages. The 10.97 on the stock IM was the first pass out but I didn't make many passes that day. The MSD were my best 4 passes that night after about five prior runs.

I do think the MSD will shine once a cam is done. I think its awesome that your ported stock intake/tb is making the ported msd work for the win.

With my stalled cars I always had better et's flashing the converter. If it was a 3300 stall id leave around 1800rpm. Way back in the late 90's I had a buddy that worked at MTI in Houston. They had done some testing on the dyno where they were flashing the converter. It would spike the torque for a sec like a heartbeat line vs a normal pull. For I went from running 12.9's to 12.8's with a best of 12.79.

I agree that the MSD should shine with the cam. But I just got a dyno graph from a guy with my ported stocker on a H/C car and it pulled hard to 6,500 with no drop off. It was a STGI cam though. I plan on doing a track rental at some point. Once I know I have the car dialed in I will do a manifold swap and see how it goes. I am assuming there will be a much wider gap between the two with the cam.

I am no drag racer and this is just my third converter car. I was a hard core stick shift Corvette guy for many years. This is the first converter car that I have actually put tires on and taken down the track so I honestly have no experience with it.

I just got off with Circle D and they echoed what you said. They want me to try from idle or just above and work my way up as I need traction. I have been coupling the converter and taking out the flash apparently hurting my 60fts. I am assuming that the stock ported made enough tq to not hurt the times or it would have just blown the tires off. The MSD, not so much. They said I need to load the suspension and the tire just a little bit and let the converter flash and do the work. It is funny that the car 60ft's .15 better than the stock converter but doesn't appear to leave nearly as hard as the stock converter. My thinking now is that I have been running off pure hp and tq since the converter is basically almost locked off the line. I am going to give it hell tonight and see how it all pans out. If I can get back to the 1.44 range I am sure I will hit my 10.70's and will be ecstatic.

I'm a man pedal guy myself.. I have owned a few race cars/street cars that were autos with stalls. Usually the track is the only time they are fun and usually they lose mph while gaining ET. Just takes more power to drive through them on the big end.
