Theft prevention

Hello all

Reading about how easy our cars are to steal with things like relay attacks, and using tracking tags to hopefully find your car after the event I’m wondering what others are using to give yourself as much protection as possible.

I don’t drive my zle m6 that often and it sits nice and secure in a locked garage but I’m not taking any measures past that. Of more concern to me is when I do drive the car and park it let’s say at a restaurant it seems these thief's need less than a minute to grab your car.

I recognize nothing will be 100% but please share what you are doing to protect your car from these asshats - both physical and electronic barriers

Thanks in advance for sharing

You can disable keyless entry, requiring a key press from the FOB to disable the alarm and start the car. This will protect against relay attacks. I would leave it disabled by default, and turn it on when you think you will be needing it. Sucks, but clearly these cars are weak against this attack.

If anyone has physical access to your car and key (maybe not even the key) for 30 minutes, they can program a new remote to it and basically walk up and take it later.

Most of the time it's going to be someone you know. So be careful about who you leave it with.

One thing you could do if you have to leave it somewhere is keep your second remote at home (or just somewhere else). When you get the car back, make sure the second remote still works. If you suffered this attack, they wouldn't have had your second remote to program back to the car.

Fido won't help you if someone's determined to get your car. Watch this repo

How long do think that took?

Anyway, at home I park in a garage, fob in a Faraday box. If I take it out I'm picky with where I go, and I have my fob in a Faraday pouch, car's well lit, preferably near security cameras. If I'm worried I bring a different car.

Your ZL1 has one of the best theft deterrents out there. It's called a manual transmission.

I've owned my ZL1 for almost seven years and never had anything close to an issue with theft.

I have my car set to auto-lock when the key fob is out of range. It beeps and flashes the lights to let me know it auto-locked. I leave nothing of value in the car. And finally, I never leave my ZL1 sit-out overnight. It's either in my garage or a storage unit 5 minutes from my house.

As annoying as the auto lock feature is I use it now. It's annoying when you're cleaning or working on the car. I swapped out my battery in my car, drove to Vegas and auto lock wasn't on. Someone got in my car, stole subs, radar detector, everything I had in there. So, I make sure auto lock is always on now. After seeing all these posts lately, maybe I got lucky to still have my car.

If I go out to a restaurant and can't see my car, or when I park it in the garage I use one of these. This and a M6 would hopefully deter someone from wanting to take my car, but in the end if they want it bad enough they will find a way.
