Cracked Runflat with just 8K miles

Hi guys,

I was about to wash the car today and saw this.

Car is almost new with 8k miles. How the hell it happened? Are this run flats so bad? I noticed they're making a lot of noise now compared to when it was new.
I will try to get the bumper to bumper warranty to cover it. Any advice on this?

This is what the manual says:

If they don't cover the tire, I already have another set of SS rims (9.5" wide) and was planning on buying 275's to install in the back.

What tires would you recommend to get? Summer only

Honestly, if you are going to get new wheels for our SS, get 10" wide fronts and 11" wide rears and go with 285/30ZR20 on the fronts and 305/30ZR20 on the rears (stock SS 1LE sizes)..

I have a LT1, bought SS rims to use 275 in the rear. I'm ok with that.

Michelin PS4S, Continental ECS 02 for regular street driving.

BTW your tire should definitely be covered under bumper-to-bumper, so you should be able to get the problem itself solved at no cost.

This mod alone will give you 60-70% of the 1LE's capabilities. I know some 1LE snobs here will disagree, but the respective numbers don't lie and, in this case, neither do the feels. I did the same and the car is tangibly much better at cornering, even a bit better in a straight line from a roll.

Thanks for the data. I'm defintely calling GM on tuesday 7AM and then dealership. Hopefully they honor the warranty.
If not, I'd just pull the trigger on the Continental 275's .

Kamero6: Sorry about the tire amigo. I’ve had my share of damage to tires through the years. It seemed that every 6 months in San Jose, I’d hear this “tap, tap, tap” when entering or leaving my apartment building’s parking lot, and it would be a screw or a nail. About half the time, I’d lose pressure too, and would need a patch.

The worst was in San Fran once when the sidewall got slashed - I have no idea how - and this was clearly not patchable.

I wish you the best of luck to get a warranty replacement - but it might be a bit of a discussion. I couldn’t guess what would cause that “crack” unless it is more of a “slash”. I had my convertible top “stabbed” twice with a sharp object by someone here in Portland. There’s no real logic to vandalism. I hope that didn’t happen to your tire.

UPDATE:

Dealer rejected warranty and so GM Corporate.

Goodyear honored it and will get a tire at no cost, just labor.

Now the dillema is that I ordered two Continental ECS 275's to assemble my SS rims but they approved the warranty so I might cancel the order...

What reason did they give for rejecting the claim? I'm guessing they said you ran over something or hit a curb?

Ughh, they said the car was in the paint shop so warranty is voided. I called that BS and they said I hit the curb, raced nascar, my dog bit the tire, etc...

I said I would fight it with GM. I called GM and the guys just denied it saying tires don't have warranty, even though the manual says otherwise.

Bottom line, they don't care about anything that won't cause a lawsuit.

Goodyear on the other hand was amazing. As soon as I got ahold of a rep, I had my warranty tire approved in 15 minutes.

I left a nasty GM review.

I havent seen dealers warranty OE tires all ive seen are referrals back to the manuf, used to have a tire insert in the glove box that stated as much.

Pretty sure tires are always the tire mfg warranty. The dealership did a lousy job of handling the claim though.

Runflats a r e actually that bad. Except when they are actually flat. They stick/handle great, gotta give em that, but the ride is dumbassedly harsh for the street.

I tried to resist the facts but 2022 1SS is so much nicer to drive with Conti DWS-06+ compared to the factory goodyear runflats.

(On 3rd set of DWS-06 on 2015 SS Sedan too, they are amazing tires, as good or better than Michelin AS4s, seemingly better than any goodyears - making them the best tires I've ever owned over 35+ cars and almost 2 million miles of driving)

BTW as a wannabee tire-shop guy I say the photo shows damage from a brutal pothole, meaning GM was right to deny the claim, and Goodyear did right to cover it.

Goodyear wants to keep you on the farm in the runflat fam but dude you know you are ready for rumspringa.
