PSA: Aftermarket exhaust users and ANC

All aftermarket exhaust users except for Corsa need to or at least should look into disconnecting the ANC (active noise cancelling) in tandem with your exhaust install. As a guy who suffers from a really bad case of tinnitus, any odd amount of drone wreaks havoc on my ears. I always noticed that having the windows down sounded better than having the windows up and my ears weren't screaming bloody murder compared to windows up. I've seen threads here and there that talked about disconnecting the ANC due to the artificial sound it pumps into the cabin but what I didn't realize was how much validity there was to it. I went and de-pinned connector X3 pins 4/5, 12/13 at the Bose amplifier in the trunk just to see if it would help any, sure enough, it did much to my ears pleasure.

What sounded before like what I could best describe as a constant bass maddening frequency of 125-160 hz bias at RPMs between 1400-1700 RPM has now shifted in the spectrum on my DB spectrum analyzer to 80-100 hz at the same RPM. The car is not only quieter to my sensitive audible perception now but also much more pleasurable to drive.

Just figured I'd bring this issue to light a little more and specifically highlight that the reason for doing this is not just for audio installs but for aftermarket exhaust setups.

If there was a way to tune the ANC I'd be entirely all over it, but based on the amps design and software limitations on the HMI for 17-18 models I don't think it is currently possible.

Interesting. An easy try it out would be to tape over those holes on your door panel before you get invasive. This ANC has been discussed quite a bit if you google it.

Yeah I’ve been running the Sub Thump harness for a few years now for that reason. Plug and play so that there are no disconnected wires kicking around.

This started on the 6th gen Camaro's and was a thing on all ZL1's. Basically any model that is equipped with the BLOWS system has this ANC crap on it.

I just de-pinned it all and then taped it all together no problems moving forward nor will ever be in the future.

I have never heard of this either. I have sensitive ears too. Please, tell me how do I disconnect this nonsense? Thanks.

There are several ways to do it but the most reversible and least invasive way is to de-pin connector X3 on the Bose amplifier harness. There is a white retainer on the connector you have to lift and remove from the connector itself and then you can use a small pick to lift the detents which hold the pins in place so you can pull out the wiring.

I just cut the ANC wires in the trunk where my factory amp and put heat shrink tubing over them.

On my Acadia I had to snip the wires to all 4 mics in the headliner. ANC is garbage and does nothing of any real benefit other than cause issues if you add a sub to the factory audio system. I didn't realize it will go haywire with aftermarket exhaust.

The only reason I preserved the wiring is so it makes the mod fully reversible without evidence of tamper and ease of reconnection.

I am really surprised it's a thing in the first place given how untunable it is in factory form, now if it was entirely tunable and modifiable I think it would change the game on aftermarket exhaust that induce drone of any form.

Hope I didn’t imply that you just left wires dangling LOL…! Definitely not what I meant. Just mentioned it because that plug and play adapter is perfect for lazy people (like me) or people who don’t love messing with wiring.

Sub Thump makes a plug and play “harness” that lets you disconnect the 2 wires in question without messing with the wiring at all. Just plug this little $19 jumper harness in between the cars wiring and the amplifier.

To be honest it was a fun little 10 minute mod that I did this morning while I was still in my pajamas that had big results but I do love tinkering and improving wherever and however I can to improve on the platform already in place. Overall I'm pretty happy with the results.

I just found their 30 second video on YouTube. Much appreciated.
