Talking Forged my first knife

I do some blacksmithing in my free time and I recently made a trip to North Carolina to learn how to make knives. Thought some of you guys might be interested.

I used a bar of 1095 hi-carbon steel.

Then after a little forging (actually a good bit, lol) I got it into the rough shape I wanted.

Then on to some rough grinding.

Rather than just a standard heat treat I chose to do a differential heat treatment by applying clay to the spine. This allows the cutting edge to harden and keeps the spin more flexible. Then I hand sanded the blade to 1000 grit and acid etched the blade. This brought out the hamon which is the transition zone in the steel from the softer material in the spine and the harder material toward the cutting edge.

Then it was time to start on the handle. I used Brazilian Cherry with copper pins.

And after some sanding, oil, and wax this was the final result.

That's pretty sweet. It looked a lot bigger until I saw it in your hand. Kudos. Nice to see people still making things by hand.

Absolutely. Getting set up and started is not cheap but if you can sell some things here and there you can recoup your investment. The problem is, the more you do it the more tools you want.

You should try that folded steel work, I love that stuff.

Looking to buy a true tamahagane folded samurai this Christmas for myself, and I love the craftsmanship.

That is definitely on my "to do" list. Forge welded blades are gorgeous but require a lot of skill and labor.
