What causes the lovely popping and burbling?

I just completed an 800 mile road trip thru very desolate lands to one of our nations "off-the-beaten-path" landmarks. My lady and I were very pleased with the car as a touring car. Very quiet with the windows up and the NPP in Jekyll not Hyde mode. I averaged 27mpg at 77mph average over 300 miles. Respectable for 455 thirsty horses. Oh, and thanks to the fine traffic enforcement efforts of the Nebraska state police I got my first traffic "souvenir" in 19 years. And it wasn't even for anything more exciting than 75 in a 65 in the middle of nowhere. Seriously if you have ever been out to far western Nebraska, you understand. Now after much babbling the actual reason for my post:

I noticed over the course of a long road trip that the car, particularly with NPP in "track" mode makes it most glorious popping, and burbling, and crackling when you let off the gas at around 3000-3100RPMs and let it fall to 2300-2400RPMs, regardless of gear. Just curious as to the engine/exhaust "dynamics" that cause this amazing soundtrack. I find that I am constantly accelerating in whatever gear I am in to 3100RPM and then letting off, just to hear the backfiring etc. Glen or one of you other encyclopedias of Camaro knowledge please chime in.

Thank you all and enjoy a few pics from the road. The presidents seemed to be unable to take their gaze off of the SS.

I love that noise! I do it every time I'm headed home on this long downhill stretch towards my neighborhood

There is a parameter in the tune called DFCO, deceleration fuel cut off. The popping is supposedly caused by the igniting of the un-burnt fuel in the exhaust as yo decelerate while in gear. Some have disabled DFCO in the tune to try and get rid of it, not sure why because it sounds awesome and actually improved fuel economy a little bit.

If you remove the cats, and tune DFCO correctly, thats how you get fire on shifts as well. Did this on my G8 (not on purpose).

Its the sounds of the hot exhaust gas mixing with the cold ambient air

It is caused by a lean condition misfire induced by the DFCO. Back in the dark days of carburetors, a dashpot was used to slow down the closing of the throttle to eliminate backfiring, burbling and stalling.

I think it sounds sloppy. I also think the higher pitched NPP exaggerates it too, whereas a deeper sounding catback hides it a little better. I always asked the tuner to tune it out on my previous Camaros.

I'm with you. Manufacturers are purposely adding it to cars and I hate it. It serves no purpose in a normally aspirated car.

I lived in Western Nebraska for a year and a half. Alliance to be precise. Those are some beautiful pictures of your Camaro in the Black Hills.
