Why do people want to remove the sound tubes? Does it really make that much of a difference while driving?

I'd like to remove mine, because I think it is stupid, and it is in the way for servicing. But I'd probably buy the 2020 OEM parts, to make it look clean.

While I agree this clutters up the engine bay some, I'm hesitant to remove mine since GM spent the R&D, time, money on dialing in the overall sound and at the time thought it was a good investment. We're probably talking less than 1-2 lb of weight savings by getting rid of it.
If it's gone for '20 models, it's probably because sales are relatively poor and they're looking for different ways to cut cost out of the model with the trade-off being some "degradation" in sound quality (that sounds like it was deemed acceptable).

Maybe they actually listened to the community? I mean with all the hate of the 2019 fascia, they were bound to do some research of oppinions. Perhaps they picked up a few other things; like a lot of owners were removing the soundtube already. Or maybe I'm giving GM too much credit here? Never the less. Removing the sound tube is a good thing. It goes directly against the poor fake engine noise that has come to be a trend in the automotive industry. |

Totally agree that the sound tube never should have been on the SS! Damn sure glad it’s not on my 2017 ZL1 and really surprised they didn’t put one on the ZL1s. My 2016 2SS had one and it really looked out of place after I installed the Cold Air Inductions CAI and I never tried to get rid of it before I found the ZL1.

Because it looks terrible and does nothing other then pump artificial sound into the cabin of the vehicle....ricer shit. It was GM's attempt to give customers that "air sucking sound" you get from installing a CAI yet still pass CAFE standards by keeping the engines noises at a minimum on the exterior.

To be fair, mustang is doing it too. Not saying it is not crap, something I'd expect from BMW.

So its not real intake noise, its simulated. The air pressure powers an air motor which produces the sound.

I agree the sound tube concept is stupid and a waste of your/my money. Although it probably doesn't add much to the price of the car, it's still something I had to buy that I didn't want, like OnStar. Damn.
I plugged my sound tube and could not tell any difference in cabin noise levels just cruising around town, but when I aired it out there was a big difference in cabin noise. All the noise was out back then, where it should be. So when I can find the part numbers of the parts, I'm removing it. I'll keep it in case a warranty problem arises. Just my two cents. |

No. I just bought one from him. Several people here have done that. Quote:
It makes the cabin quieter from background noise. You can still hear the engine and the exhaust just fine. Easier to talk to your passenger, even on the highway. Even in my convertible with the top up.
