Considering move from RS V6 to LT1

Hi all, I'm thinking about trading from current 17 RS V6 manual to a LT1 manual in rally green. The V6 RS is a great car, a lot of fun to drive. I put the GM performance air intake (with GM tune) and Flowmasters on it, and it actually sounds really good - but there is no mistaking it for a V8. I'm more of a V8 or nothing kind of guy (had a couple Z06s and CTS-Vs) but bought the V6 because it is the car my 17 year old son drives the most and was a ridiculously good deal.

The LT1 seems like a great upgrade, and would scratch the V8 itch. Plus, dark green is my favorite car color and it seems hard to find so I am really interested in the rally green. I also think we may have only a few years left of a manual trans V8 option (in a Camaro or otherwise).

There are a couple of things holding me back. First, I worry that LT1 is too much performance for my 17 year old son. He is very responsible, and is a good, safe driver, but that just seems like a risky choice. The loud V6 RS is not slow though, so it isn't like coming from a Civic to a V8 Camaro. Second, I wonder how much different the LT1 would be versus the LT V6. The low end torque and sound would probably be the biggest difference.

Good idea or bad idea? Maybe I'll wait until my son goes to college and trade the V6 on a C8 and give up on the manual V8 idea!

I had a Mustang LX 5.0 when I was 20. My parents helped me out. If they knew how I drove it, they would have regretted their decision. And that car is slow compared to an SS.

I'm all for the LT1 over the V6 but not for a 17yr old. Don't care how responsible he is. 455hp will corrupt someone that young too easily. I personally would not do it.

I would not put a 17 year old in an SS. I feel like it could get out from under me and this is my 4th Camaro.

That said, I had a 1981 Z28 when i was 16. It only had 175 HP, but I believe that car made me the man I am today HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I did own a 2016 RS. It was a great car! I wish i had just kept it as my daily driver and bought my SS to track.

If you are at all concerned about resale value, I would hazard a guess that the V8 will hold its value longer than the V6 car will.

Just sayin...

I wouldn't put a 17 year old boy in a LT1 powered car. Test drive one if you havent already. They are powerful and this is my 6th Camaro. I've never owned a V6 Camaro. I had a modified LS1 car back in the day.

Dont let him drive it

I can't even imagine what kind of trouble I would have gotten in or what hospital I would have ended up in if I had a car like one of these when I was 17.

No way I would let my teenage son drive my SS. You could easily end up short one son.

I owned a 2016 SS and now own a 2018 SS 1LE. While my 2016 was in the shop with the A8 issues they loaned me a 2017 RS with the V6. As you said, it's a nice car, but the V6 and V8 are worlds apart.

I told my wife after the first time going WOT with the V6 the engine was telling me "I'm trying, I'm trying." The V8 is saying "hold onto your a$$ cause here we go."

I've owned quite a few fast cars. The SS 1LE is the only one where I felt I might not be able to push it to the limit of what it can do.

Driving the SS with a stick takes self discipline. Will he be able to keep his foot out of it when coming upon an empty 1 or 2 mile stretch of empty open highway? Your answer to this is the answer to your own question ...Grasshoppa.

under the right foot of my 17yo.

She was lucky to get 185 hp.

Not really, as I have my own car and don't have room for another car. Also, I'm talking about the new LT1 model, not an SS, although not much different for the purposes we are talking about.

I could wait until he goes to college and then trade the V6, although he'd still need a car when he comes back. Hopefully they will still be making a Camaro in a couple years!

The LT1 is the same engine as the SS so power wise there is no difference. We are all saying NO, do NOT let a 17yr old behind a car with that much power.
