Manual mode in the a8 is a joke, it is so slow

You know how manufacturers always talk about shift times being lightning fast? Well what the fail to mention is how fast it is from the time you request the shift to the time it completes the shift.

The shift may be .2 seconds, but that doesn’t help much if it takes .5 seconds to initiate the shift after you call for it.

This is why you leave the a8 in auto, it aint no pdk

In stock form yes. But It's actually a lot faster once you tune the A8 and remove a lot of the torque management and quicken the shift times.

I refuse to believe this was a real thread.

OP were you doing 0-60 runs starting in 6th gear?

I cruise in M mode in 6th gear at 50 mph, he floored it, NO PULL or POWER at all, he then dropped all the way to 2nd gear at the same 50mph, and it pulled like a mad dog. I never knew about this, he also told me that I shift a lot earlier before redline too many times to the point where I’m at 5-7th gear at 40 or less, which was another thing. I was inexperienced over it, he then explained to me about the lag in flooring it in Automatic mode, when flooring in automatic, the brief moment before it pulls, the ECU is downshifting to the lowest gear then pulling, he said it’s normal for automatic mode to have a brief delay before pulling when flooring. He also stated that when in automatic mode, you can press the downshift once, then hold it again and the car will AUTOMATICALLY drop to the lowest gear, he then floored it and it pulled! I didn’t know about the gear and speed thing. After all this, there’s still one last thing... there’s a “dead zone” when slightly hitting the accelerator in automatic mode.

Man, if this isn't a troll post, kudos for the OP for admitting his mistakes and willingness to learn but honestly, if you don't understand how an engine makes power or how gear ratio's work, you have no business buying/driving this car, especially in manual mode. Please just put it in auto for now and be careful, at least until you learn to drive. You will get yourself (and others) in trouble real fast not knowing what you are doing.

When I drove mine on the street it was fun to use the manual mode but rarely used the paddles. I have never made a pass down the track and manually shifted it and I know it would be a slower pass as its hard to shift these cars on time stock or modified. You'll always run faster letting it shift on its own.

Yes an Apology is needed for you allowing a car with an SS name plate to be beat by 6 banger Mustangs and BMWs.

^This 2x. Set up your mirrors properly to eliminate blind spots, drive very carefully, expect the unexpected from everyone else on the road. Also, don't even think about disabling traction control or stabilitrak until you mastered the car, you can kill yourself or others in a split second.

OP, you should consider yourself blessed or extremely lucky to have such a hot car at such a young age. I can't speak for anyone else here, but I had to drive really crummy cars until I was MUCH older and could afford something nice.

Someone mentioned instruction. As you learned from that guy you took a ride with, a lot of how to drive fast is about mental skills and knowledge. If you can find some kind of high performance driving school to attend, I think you would really enjoy the heck out of it and would learn a lot that would help you. You could improve your skills in a controlled environment, and I bet that some of what you would learn about how your car performs, could help you to avoid crashing on the street.

This is the sort of thing I am thinking of: https://autoweek.com/article/car-lif...complete-guide

If there are any race tracks near you, most of them have some kind of business associated with the track that does some kind of driver training, so check around.

It's questions like this that make me wonder how you managed to drive a BMW.

I'm still hearing my BS alarm at full-tilt...

No, that’s when I was cruising, however I was doing 0-60’s from 1st, but never hit the 4’s this whole thread was made from my ignorance regarding the gears and power band stuff, basically issues with power from cruising/roll ons, I also stated the crappy 0-60’s I was getting because I thought it tied in with the acceleration power similar to roll ons. Yes this is a legit thread and I’ve always played with manual mode. The reason why I didn’t like automatic mode was because of the power response, obviously not being similar to manual response.
For me as a driver, I want the car to respond as I hit the pedal, similar to ZL1’s or cars with superchargers. I don’t like the car taking time to respond and pull as I hit the pedal.
I like/want instant power, or near instant.
Idk how well these A8’s transmissions are compared to the 19’s A10 SS as well as the ZL1’s A10’s, and what’s PDK?
