Verisk Car Data Collection

After reading some of the threads I decided to go the route of requesting my data. I sent requests to Verisk and LexisNexis, while LN sent me an envelope saying my driver's license wasn't sufficient enough, Verisk just got back to me.

Here's the first page if you don't want to download the PDF.

Those sons of bitches. When did you make the requests? I did both on 4/3. Still waiting for the reports.

March 15 based on my email, never got a confirmation or anything until this in the mail today. I resubmitted my driver's license to LN so probably another month on their end I'm guessing

So is this part of Smart Driver? Or are these independent companies that give Data to insurance companies to see your driving habits?

If only you had upgraded to get better brakes (to handle all those "hard braking events"), LED headlights (for nighttime driving), and tires rated for "speeds over 80 mph". Then your car might be equipped to safely handle such dangerous conditions!

That's the first time I've seen the hard braking/acceleration metric defined. Interesting that it's in kph/s, not mph/s.

So, it looks like GM is reporting data based on VIN. That would surely allow an insurer with access to vehicle ownership and state DMV databases, or policy information, to correlate the data.

Thanks bumbleboy.

So a change of 6mph/second is flagged. Hmmm. I’m curious to see what my track outings look like!

Sorry to see that they reported you.

At least we have some insight on what an "Event" is.

Acceleration 34,200 km/h2
Acceleration (m/s2) 2.638889 m/s2
Acceleration (g) 0.269092 g

0.27G seems to be too much for them

In comparison, a toyota corolla does 0-60 in 9 sec. Resulting in 0.314G in average. (more in 1st gear, low speed, and less close to 60 and over.)
If the car does 0-30mph in 4 sec, this means 0.341G
Now I see the reasoning behind it, nobody is pushing a corolla like this all the time. And that's probably the slowest car in America. Any other car/suv is more than capable than that.

If you do 0-60 in less than 10 seconds, hard acceleration. Any merge in the highway with a car that has more than 200hp or close, will trigger an event. Braking events also.

If I were to be the data analyst I would be looking to deviations from the normal/trend. In any case, a sports car will get punished since they're more capable than the avg car.

The real problem here is people on their phones all the time. Google tracks that FYI.

They probably made some analysis and determined that was a reasonable number to trigger an event. Then you need to see how many events are triggered and what's the median/avg per mile. Any user that deviates from that curve is driving aggressively.

If they're nice people they can even do the math, separated by make and model, to be fair. It isn't reasonable to compare a Corolla CVT 1.8 with a manual camaro, any spirited shifting will go over 0.27G.

1/2 - 3/4 of gas in a corolla will get you flagged, from a red light.

Our cars will get flagged in any red light, as any driver with any SUV/truck will.

I'm wondering if instead of acceleration events, speed has more weight. They can definitely calculate that based on time and miles driven.

That is some interesting information bumbleboy. I was able to order my LN report which was pretty easy. However, the Google search for the Nexis report is a bit tricky as what I was able to find was for claims and loss. Where did you get your Request for Disclosure? Link?

Thanks!

They (GM) can do all this. But can't do a security update to the OBDII port vulnerability to help prevent our cars from being stolen.

I meant Verisk. I ordered the Lexis Nexis ... too early and not enough coffee!
