Tire Pressure

I just put new wheels and tires on my 2017 2lt. The Continental ExtremeContact™ DWS06 Plus 245x40 20, tires show a max psi of 51 on the sidewall. My camaro shows 35psi tire pressure on the door jam.

Question what pressure should I be running these tires at?

Run them at 35 psi.

truckrglenn: On tires, the maximum psi shown on the sidewall is a GENERIC rating of what maximum psi that tire can safely be filled to for applications that require a high psi. However, if you run those high pressures on a vehicle that does not require them, you will get both unsafe handling AND rapid tread wear.

You should always instead follow the actual vehicle manufacturer's recommendations on the actual psi to use on that vehicle, as the manufacturer has done testing to determine the best and safest psi to run on that specific model of vehicle.

The exceptions to that arise only if:

- You change to a different tire size, in which case you follow the directions given you by a TIRE PROFESSIONAL, or

- You are using the tire in a competitive setting, where the best advice will come from fellow participants.

35 psi cold.

The max rating (51) is where they may burst, and don't forget that hot air has higher pressure, as you drive, that 35 psi will go up to 37-38 at least. Don't even go near 50 psi.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I did set the tires to 35psi using two different digital gauges.

As arpad said, this will change with temperature. We have had some wide fluctuations the past few weeks in south jersey and I have gone as low as 32 and as high as 39.

I think 35 cold is on the top side if you get even wear with that then that's great but Id be looking at overinflated wear patterns down the road in mileage

Dunno... the manufacturer recommends 35 psi cold for stock SS and 32 psi cold for 1LE spec wide tires. Now these are Conti all-seasons, not Goodyear summer tires, but I'd still stick with the factory recommendation, as their size and load index are the same as stock.
