When to tune?
I’ve been reading mixed responses on when a good time to get a reputable tune is on a ZL1....I have on order a Mamo ported throttle body and have been looking into a cat back exhaust from Borla, and than possibly a roto fab cold air intake. Would all three of those particular bolt ons require a tune....I know I’d get more out of the car with a tune, but I am trying to keep the 4 year 48,000 mile Chevrolet warranty intact.....thanks for any help.

Soon as your ready to void warranty. Tune and flex fuel sensor with some E70 provides substantial gains(70+ whp)

I have the same 3 mods and a tune is not required...but those parts really aren't doing anything for me besides some extra sound, which I love.
It will be fun to one day add headers, possibly a cam, and tune it to fully take advantage of everything. |

The throttle body seems like the only thing that might need a tune.

Your warranty should be 5 years and 60k on powertrain, unless what you mentioned is what you have left on your warranty. Mine has roto-fab dry filter, Atak cat back, I can tell right off the bottom of 1st when I disengage the clutch and roll out /maybe the car ran for 5 minutes it will spin out a little in grass or a slippery surface. I believe if it was stock it wouldn't do this, but when purchased the mods where on the car. I'm going to wait till warranty is over and add a cam and tune then !

Tune after LTs, pulley or internal mods. External air intake flow mods like the ones you mentioned do not require a tune.

Unfortunately I live in California so LTs won’t be in my future...

Hmm during the small time I’ve had to research modifications I haven’t seen a flex fuel sensor.....I’ll have to take a look at that...

The basic bolt ons do not require a tune but you can always benefit from one. GM left some good power in there for us tuners to find. Flex fuel will obviously require some tuning to work. The sensor must be turned on in the ecm and the tables need to be adjusted some. We're doing free bolt on tune updates for anyone who orders HP tuners from us. So if you guys decide to do a tune hit us up for some easy power.

Everyone here should do some deep research on the E92 computer and you will come to your own conclusion, which is the truth...
E92 is torque targeting, so if you increase airflow/efficiency and don't change what the program is targeting, it will slowly "tune down" the power level back to what it was targeting stock and it does this by opening the TB less and less until it hits those torque targets. At best, increasing airflow with mods and no tune will widen the window in which the E92 can hit the target, in other words, a car on Track on a hot day with a CAI/ported TB might be able to hit full torque targets with ~86% TB opening where the car on track with no modes, might be falling short at ~86%. This is honestly, the best I can come up with in defense of modding these cars without a tune. If you want a real 'pump' for your car on a track day, I'd suggest trying 101/109 unleaded octane. You will eliminate knock and get optimal power all day long on track. No tune required. Finally, if you are going to 'break the seal' and you just want to have a bit more power for a track day, I'd check out an E85 / intake combo from someone like Jannetty. It is the cheapest, most versatile bang for buck you can do. Once it's dialed in, drive it all day on E15, head to the track with E85 and have an extra 75 rwhp or more along with very consistent power production. Just my .02.
