Thoughts on going to tail of the dragon Memorial Weekend?
Hey all, I've never been to the tail or deals gap before. I am planning on driving up near Atlanta and hitting the tail on Saturday before Memorial Day. Is it going to be a madhouse that weekend? Any tips or suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Probably a madhouse. Check the events for what is happening up there. Between all the cars and bikes..probably not the best idea for an impromptu trip.

It will be fantastic if you don't mind driving 20 MPH with all the 1000's of other cars, motorcycles and broken down/wrecked bikes.

Ive done the tail of the dragon before , but the last time was the best and most challenging on the way to camarofest last year @ 5am pitch dark , no one on the road , pushing the limits of machine and man just before dawn . With the dark night watchful guardian OST playing on the radio.......

If you value your Camaro you shouldn't go anywhere near a popular place on Memorial Day weekend. That's just suicide for your mental health.

I would go on a weekday or avoid it on a holiday weekend.

It's going to be hot AF this week. To each their own, but think it's nicest to do a run like this in the fall when the leaves and scenery are changing, and there's also some nice crisp cool air for your engine to gulp up.

Thanks everyone, I figured as much. Problem is I'll be just east of Atlanta for 4 days with friends and I have Saturday morning free, and it's a 10 hour drive from Tampa, so I won't be getting up there to play on the twisties very often.
I'm kinda hoping the drive up and back from there will be the best part of it. My buddy said take 60 up to 68, to 165 east to 143 and 129 around Lake Santeetla. Any route suggestions from Stone Mountain GA would be appreciated. Alas, I gotta do it since I am already near there. I'll be a slowpoke anyway as I am still getting used to performance cars, only have 800 miles on the sled... I've been a motorcycle guy my whole life. |

Tail of the Dragon is horribly overcrowded on weekends due to all of the publicity. I have been there a few times, always on a motorcycle. You will only have even a chance of getting a clean run, i.e., not being stuck behind someone during the week. On the weekend, there is no chance unless maybe you are there at 5:30 in the morning, I dunno.
The dragon is a fun, cool, twisty road, but there are many in that part of the country, so don't worry about it. Ask your friends and you will find plenty to have fun on. If you are used to Florida roads, these hilly/twisty roads are going to make your head explode, LOL.

Hell to the no. You'll be in traffic behind sight-seers and Harley's, being nagged by impatient sport bikes riding up your ass and the overlook, Killboy's store, and the resort will be mobbed on the other end. Tapoco Lodge will probably be packed as well. I hit the dragon several times a year being in Knoxville. It's just not fun when it's busy.
