What are these for?

What are these metal brake plates for? (they come behind the brake pads)
My car makes ringing/bells noises when I brake, I'm thinking about leaving these out to see if it stops the noise.

I haven't taken mine apart yet , as i have only 7000 miles , but they look like a buffer between piston and pad.
They also look like they have a imprint from piston.
If pistons are aluminum , and pad frames are steel, difference of material ,plate is to prevent oxidation.
My recommendation , leave them in.
The noise could be the squealers on rotors, to indicate change out pads , if pads are good, consult...
