Very true about the race car, ZL1. I was talking about the pace car in pink that is an SS.

9/10 times the pace cars travel from track to track and they’re supplied by the manufacturer as a sponsor of NASCAR. The pink Camaro SS was on display at the GM headquarters just weeks ago, sitting in the front window as you walk in. The Toyota’s from last year were used in tons of races from the first week to one of the last few weeks of the season.

At the Brickyard GM brought it all. They had at least 5 Camaros including the 2019 SS and RS also brought the new Blazer RS. At US Nationals in Indy they stepped it up too, Must have had 5 Corvettes including one without the body showing all the internals. Numerous specialty Corvettes, Camaros, and Chevelles. The only problem they have with these pace cars they will sit on dealer lots for at least a year. At the end of next year I have a feeling you could make a great deal on one of these pink cancer ones. They also had the SS model at the Brickyard, and the Indy 500 the last several years. I have never seen a ZL1 pace car on a dealer lot.

I did find it very cool to see Chevy change their NASCAR to the ZL1 & Gordon to tout it's pace car debut at the 500 saying it's a 200mph vehicle...at least now they mimic an actual performance car they mfg. While they all look the same, Chevy certainly has the coolest front end currently. Seems stupid for any of them to be racing grocery getters as their racing 'stock' car. Sorry, this is my little 'sticks in my craw' rant for the evening. 1st world complaints. |

Why not? They have before. The inaugural Brickyard 400 (summer of '94) they had a '95 Monte Carlo pace car while they were still racing Luminas. I'm sure that wasn't the only time

I can’t speak to what happend last century in NASCAR, but I assume which pace car is presented now is a manufacturer marketing decision. There are still a lot of 2018 Camaros for sale, there’s a little controversy over the look of the 2019 Camaros and I wouldn’t expect the 2019 Camaro to appear with a big fanfare until Daytona next year - if Chevy is still the pace car provider of choice.
BTW, the pink pace car at Martinsville is not the ‘19 pink SS Chevy has been showing - black bumper bar, flowtie and all. Also, the pace car situation varies from one sanctioning body to the next and one track to the next. There are two types of pace cars - some supplied by the sanctioning body, some supplied by the manufacturer and some supplied locally. The lead pace car (first one on the track) often is driven by a celebrity during the parade laps, which may include several “pace cars.” Sometimes the celebrity will start the race, and sometimes the last car in the line of pace cars, with an approved driver or sanctioning body employee, pilots the real pace car to start the race and take control during caution periods. At least Ford got the Mustang back in the Cup Series. But these cars are all tooled to a spec. Not like off the showroom floor of past lore, stock cars.

Just remember that we still have no real video footage of the car from Chevrolet. There are not even new media pictures for the 2019 Camaro. All we got is the cheap stuff they made for the reveal.
So actually journalists can't show the car in magazines or on YouTube without recording their own footage. It's just a shame how bad Chevy is at marketing.
