Octane and Timing

today we logged a couple of pulls on my stock tune car. I am doing Ted jannetty flex fuel conversion next week. Right now I blend gt260 Sunoco with 93 to get around 96 octane. Todays log we saw up to 24.5 degrees of timing. I was surprised as I hear stock is usually around 20deg ? Also I have done LT's with cats and full exhaust, rotofab , and today I put the LT5 tb from jannetty. Other then turning off the rear cats, no tuning, no codes, and it runs like a scalded dog. I know Ted's tuning will help immensely though. So is that much timing unusual with stock tune ? The car seems to have learned to use the extra octane.

That's good t hear because here in Thailand we have ULP which is 95 Octane Petrol and we have Gasohol 95 (which is of course E10).

24 degrees of timing at WOT at what rpm, what spark airmass and cylinder mass?

I think stock map on my 2018 the timing peaked at 22. I couldnt run anymore than 18 up top with my mods as it would knock a little. With E30 I run around 23 degrees up top with a 12.5 A/F ratio.

IME the ECU has a high and low octane table that is programmed from the factory. You won't ever get more timing then what is in that table(on non alcohol based fuels) combined with the IAT, Humidity, and ECT spark modifier tables.

What likely is happening is that the car is not getting full timing on pump gas. So the added octane is allowing you to get the full available timing.

My stock timing is about 22 or 23 degrees and my E85 timing adds 4 degrees max depending on the amount of E the sensor sees in the fuel line.

Great info, I will let you know how Ted's flex fuel program works out. Waiting on the jsm booster which will be here tomorrow. The car loves the blended gt260 at 6 gals 100 and 13 gals 93. But at 9.59 a gallon it gets expensive. I drive the car quite a bit. Thanks

My SS had two timing tables and it would get stuck on the low timing table if you put bad fuel in it. Do the 2018 ZL1s have the same issue and you have to do the fuse pull?

no you don't have to pull a fuse, put good octane back in it and it will revert back to the high octane table.
