This is what worked for me: found dealers within 200 miles (max distance for me) that had the cars using CarGurus (look for new, ZL1 coupe, manual, above some dollar value to find the ZLEs), called all of them and told them if they could let their car go for X dollars to give me a ring and no rush as I'd check back each month. The sales people were almost all very nice to deal with and the few that were dismissive, I just called the dealership later and talked to someone else (I found it's not the dealership, it's the person you deal with at the dealership). I did a lot of talking on the phone over a few months but eventually I got a call saying the price I wanted was acceptable (and driving to pick up the car, another dealer called!). I think the price you're looking to pay is fine (low, but fine) especially since you're getting to a point where it is cold (the salespeople I spoke with seemed to think their sports cars sit in the winter), it's a new model year (if they have a '19 ZLE the '18 may be a tough sell), and the end of the quarter/year is right around the corner. If you look nationally, there are a lot out there (I tried national searches too and was talking with a D.C.-area dealer with 10 '18 ZLEs(!) and with several '19s enroute; there seemed to be a lot at MD and VA dealers). My backup plan was to order a '19 exactly how I wanted it and pay full price if nothing came up by late December/early January (I told each salesperson this too as I wanted to be up front with them). Good luck! |

I'm pretty happy with getting 5k off my Zl1 in the bay area. Also towed in a WRX with a blown engine and they gave me a pretty decent deal on that considering I had already invested in the deal getting it towed in.
I could have spent a lot more time and energy scraping a few k more off each end of the deal but I'm happy with what I got. |

Here's my take...
1. You absolutely want to drive the car before you buy. Listen for engine issues, flutters, hesitation, pinging -- these engines do not all come flawless out of the factory. My 2015 ZL1 had pre-detonation on 91 octane (all we get in CA). My 2017 Grand Sport had rod knock on cyl#5 (engine replaced). My 2017 Z06 had issues with the Stabilitrak randomly going into limp mode no matter how easy I drove it -- never resolved. So drive it before you buy it, it might save you from one of these issues. 2. Never pay MSRP unless you absolutely **MUST** have the car today and you don't mind paying too much. 3. Never listen to sales guys, it's not a rare car, they're not limited production, they're not trickling out the door and back-ordered forever... Its all BS. 4. Everything is subject to supply and demand. Where you live and how many people can afford your car determine dealer allocation and dealer markup. Some dealers hold onto a car thinking they've got some rare gem but they are behind the times. 5. Ignore sales tax and other fees when comparing with others because it varies from region to region. Given the above -- I paid $68k even for mine with every option there aren't many on this car... PDR? What else? Floor mats? MSRP was 73k or something like that? I think there was some rebate but also some no-haggling haggling was necessary. Dealers claim haggle-free price but you will find they are very willing to make a deal. However be careful they will turn around and reclaim every dollar from a trade-in, etc. Don't agree to anything such as paint treatment or gap insurance until AFTER you start talking to the finance guy, then you play hard to get. He's the one that can work deals to improve your finance rate. If you're paying cash then that's even more leverage. Having said that -- gap is always a good idea. Everything else is a scam unless the finance guy can essentially get it for you for free (which they do because they have a quota to meet). Hope this helps.

I noticed that the gas guzzling tax went from $1300.00 2018
to 2019 $1700.00. There are alot of 2018 out there, I plan on buying mine by this time next year. I have one big question, if you buy out of state, do you pay tax there and back at your home state ? |

You only pay your home state/local taxes. Most dealerships are willing to handle this for you. Some will charge a fee as they use an agent to take care of it in some cases. Some dealerships will just not bother charging the tax at all and then you'll have to go register it and pay the taxes then (like you would with a private party purchase).

It's all Marketing's fault!
The car must have fallen into the next lower MPG bin... (19.5-20.5).

So, went to check out a 2019 1LE at a dealer only 40 minutes from me. I wanted to see the Garnett red in person and it actually looked really good. When I was looking at the car I noticed the tires looked extremely worn. So I asked the salesman how many miles and he said “it has a little bit”. So I opened up the car and waited for the odometer to pop up and it showed around 700ish. I was told the “boss man” used it to drive home and have some fun. Probably didn’t adhere to any form of break in, they cleaned it up, and back in the showroom.

IMO you should avoid it. You'll get differing opinions on the necessity of break-in, though I'm of the mindset that break-in really affects longevity. So if you plan on keeping the car beyond the warranty (or plan on modding it) don't buy it unless they mark the price down enough that its worth your headaches. If it were me, I'd not pay above 60k and have them throw in an extended warranty minimum. Try to squeeze them for new tires too
