Headers void warranty on engine?

I asked my dealer if I installed long tube headers if it would void warranty. At first he said yes, then came back and said it wouldn't.

Anyone confirm this? If they say it won't should I get it in some kinda form of writing.

I believe that kind of mod will require a tune. That is what will void the power train warranty.

Interesting, has anyone had a dealer install long tube and modify the factory settings?

it doesn't matter if the dealer says it won't void the tune. The second GM requests them to send a copy of the ECM your warranty will be gone.

Headers don't require a tune, it is highly recommended however.

You can install headers without a tune, thus keeping your warranty with the exception of the exhaust...obviously they're not going to warranty something that is not part of the OEM setup.

but like said above. If you want the most out of your mods the tune is needed and that is what voids the power train warranty

If the dealer says they won't void you're warranty you should be good to go. Every service manager is different, some care and some don't. If they are cool with headers ask them about the tune as well. Maybe you have a laid back dealer. Some dealers just want to do the work themselves, obviously to make money and ensure the work is done properly.

But if the car needed warranty work, when the dealer requested the parts from GM then wouldn't GM ask to see proof that the car is still valid under the warranty? Once GM sees it's not then they would tell the dealer "tough shit" I imagine.

Question though - you say it's recommended but not required to get a tune with headers. What are the implications of not getting a tune? Would you gain some HP but just not as much as you could? Would it hurt performance or gas mileage at certain RPMs?

It really depends on the headers and conditions. You could throw some codes from your oxygen sensors or, if your cats are removed, you'll throw codes for emissions. These kinds of errors affect performance because the ECM will adjust to conservative settings to try to protect the engine. It is significantly more common to throw codes with long-tubes compared to shorty headers.

Tuning definitely makes a difference in terms of performance.

I tuned my car at 7 weeks old, 2200K miles on it. I had a talk with the service manager at my dealership about tuning and warranty before I tuned it. Im lucky, my dealership is real cool with mods. They do not have a problem covering anything under warranty. BUT. We also have an understanding that if something on the powertrain were to break/fail. And GM refused to cover it. I could end up paying. BUT. That means I will be upgrading at that time. Perfect reason and time to upgrade. My dealership is for me, not against me. They installed my headers. I brought my SCT X3 tuner with JRE's updated tune with me to the dealer. So I could download the new tune after the headers were installed. I am lucky, they are good at what they do there. The service manager and the mechanic who works on my car, keep trying to talk me into a cam package. If/when I ever do a cam. They will be doing the install.

No will not void warranty.

Untill something breaks , then your own your own .

Local dealers say one thing , but the local dealer is not making the call GM is .
