Radar Detector Poll

Do you use a radar detector regularly? I'm wondering because I've been thinking about getting one but not sure if it's really worth it given the use of laser and all the false alerts with radar. I used to use a detector but quit years ago because with instant on I found I'd still get zapped and having the detector on the dash seemed like a sure way to get a ticket.

Its usefulness will also heavily depend on the area you live in, that is, what kind of equipment you are up against.

Haven’t used one in 20 years, just gotta know when and where you can speed. Luckily many are doing 80 in the left lane on our toll roads here in Mexico. 650hp makes for quick and easy passing. Personally I struggle to justify the cost of the high end detectors for myself but understand why many use them.

So true and another reason why I don’t have one.

True. I was against getting a detector for a number of years because I thought it would make me complacent in looking for cops on the road. I purchased a Uniden R7 mid last year, since I was going to be doing a few road trips, and it has saved me many, many times. I still look out for cops and am smart about where I speed, but its nice having a backup if I miss something or to warn me of something more than a mile away.

Waze is much better and reliable than a radar detector

I always use one, a Uniden R3. It has saved me at least 10 times what it cost in 2 years of driving my ZL-1, in fines and higher insurance rates. I am careful where I speed. Never around town. Plus, you still have to be observant and exercise discretion when going out for a rip.

I have also had to drive to and from California quite a bit in my Grand Cherokee, and a detector is really nice on the highway. I can set the cruise control for 10-12 over, and make good time with minimal worry.

Yea, if you like staring at a screen every 10 seconds while driving. or don't like music blasting while "feeling the rush".

I have a Radenso Pro M and it has saved me many times. Minimal false alerts. 8/10 times it alerts me, I had to. (and I am glad I did)

They give you a 1 year ticket free guarantee or its free deal. Just don't be stupid about it. A radar wont save you if you fly passed an unmarked car that is not running radar.

I have the Uniden R7 and it has been a game changer. Its saved me from numerous tickets. Although it's alot "chattier" than others from my understanding but as far as range goes it's unmatched. The V1 gen2 might give it a run for it's money, but it just came out this year.

Radar is still the king when it comes to speed enforcement. It's easier to use than laser it's more or less just point in the general direction and your done. Laser you need to aim it directly at the vehicle you wanting to check for speeding. Not saying it's not used it's just a little more involved

Waze won't help you if you're the first one to encounter a trap, if no one else reported it before you, or if it's dark.

If you use Waze alone, sooner or later you'll get caught.

Need to use both a radar detector and Waze.

Just drive the speed limit. That's what I do and never have to worry about an hidden cop or one that does radar.

Never had a ticket as well.

I know it may not be good for everyone especially on a car forum. But that's what I decided to do at some point and never regretted it.

The Camaro is fun between 0 to 100km/h so that's perfect for me. I'll bring it to a track someday to use its full potential.

I've already done few pulls at a 1/4mile track and it was plenty of fun.

Good luck!

Haven't used one since the 1980's, and I doubt it ever made any difference. With only two speeding tickets in the last 50 years and none in the last 20, I just get out there and drive at about the prevailing speed of traffic. Faster than some, slower than others.

Not having to throw 8+ hours/day at that thing called a 'day job' seems to be helping
