Your phone uses wifi when your in your house, or a coffee shop, when it interacts with the car it use BlueTooth. The car does or should not have the ability to use your phone's data plan via BlueTooth, don't think that is technically possible, not for GM at least, maybe the CIA or similiar. Can't imagine a situation (except when you set up your phone as a Hotspot) where GM would abuse Bluetooth and jump on the data plan your paying for.

Bluetooth is a low power wireless means of connecting two devices (your car and your phone), your phone uses the LTE or 5g system to connect to the internet. The Android app your using on your phone controls the flow of data from and back to the internet, then to the car.

Wireless Android Auto uses wifi to connect to the car. If you turn off wifi and connect to your car, it will immediately turn wifi on to connect. I think this is to allow a much higher bandwidth between the two devices then bluetooth is able to provide, as that's why they just made people plug it in for so long. Bluetooth doesn't provide a ton of transfer speed

That's true. That's why that could be one way of transfering data. It takes probably 1 second to send the package. The data is most probably encrypted and small.

I don't use Android auto but that makes sense. Still believe the app you are using controls the data flow back and forth as well as the Android operating system in the background.

It really would open up GM to lawsuits if someone could prove they were jumping on your paid for data stream by design to send their telematics to their server. Anything is possible, just doesn't seem probable, been wrong before.

Better late than never...

GM stops sharing driver data with brokers amid backlash

Customers, wittingly or not, had their driving data shared with insurers.

Jonathan M. Gitlin - 3/22/2024, 4:23 PM

After public outcry, General Motors has decided to stop sharing driving data from its connected cars with data brokers. Last week, news broke that customers enrolled in GM's OnStar Smart Driver app have had their data shared with LexisNexis and Verisk.

Those data brokers in turn shared the information with insurance companies, resulting in some drivers finding it much harder or more expensive to obtain insurance. To make matters much worse, customers allege they never signed up for OnStar Smart Driver in the first place, claiming the choice was made for them by salespeople during the car-buying process.

Now, in what feels like an all-too-rare win for privacy in the 21st century, that data-sharing deal is no more.

"As of March 20th, OnStar Smart Driver customer data is no longer being shared with LexisNexis or Verisk. Customer trust is a priority for us, and we are actively evaluating our privacy processes and policies," GM told us in a statement.

Found out today that Andorid Auto could use the car gps antenna for location.

The location is fronzen to the last known location. If you don't unlock the phone, the location is stuck there.

Somehow, the car tells the phone the GPS location. I think this might be useful since the car's antenna is more powerful and you wouldn't be using the phone battery. It's smart but we don't know what else could be shared.

I get a report on my C7 every month and they can't get the info cause the port has a Range device. So maybe that blocks them from getting anything.

Update- received the code for my latest LexiNexis report today and lo and behold the smart driver feature somehow got turned back on and was reporting data. I guess I’ll have to check it every time I get in the car now. The report is dated 3/15 so before the press release that they would stop sharing data with them.

Noted on the company truck that the speed limits for a given section of highway are often incorrect. How many times is that being used against you when you are actually following the posted speed limits, and not what the vehicle is saying?

Curious about the Range and other OBD port devices that may cause issues with this. I have a Range AFM disabler in both our 2017s.
